Building a strong, loving relationship with your spouse requires consistent effort, communication, and understanding. Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture and spatial arrangement, can also be of some help. As vastu offers practical and easy-to-implement strategies that can increase the flow of positive energy in your living space, particularly the bedroom.

The bedroom is the heart of a home where two people share their deepest thoughts, emotions, and intimacy, says Jeevika Sharma, Vastu expert. “By aligning the space with Vastu principles, couples can create a haven that  nurtures their physical health and also strengthens their emotional bonds. Small adjustments in direction, placement, and decor can transform the space into a source of positivity and growth for the relationship," she says.

Your bedroom is a place to sleep and also a sanctuary for rejuvenation, relaxation, and connection. When designed according to Vastu principles, your bedroom becomes a nurturing space that fosters physical health, emotional balance, and a deeper bond between partners.

Sharma shares some simple yet effective Vastu tips for transforming your bedroom into a space that radiates positive energy and strengthens your relationship:

  • Direction: The direction of your bedroom plays a vital role in ensuring stability and harmony. According to Vastu, the master bedroom should ideally be situated in the southwest or south part of the home. This direction is associated with strength, control, and stability, creating an ideal environment for married couples. A southwest-facing room promotes a grounded, supportive atmosphere that helps the relationship grow and thrive.

  • Bed placement: Positioning your bed correctly is good for health and emotional well-being. Vastu recommends placing the bed with the headboard against the south or west wall. This alignment ensures that when you sleep, your head points south, which is said to align with the Earth's magnetic field, promoting restful sleep and improved mental clarity. This simple change can help remove disturbances that might affect your energy levels and mood, leading to a more peaceful relationship.

  • Mirrors: Mirrors can be a tricky element in bedroom Vastu. While they reflect beauty and light, if placed incorrectly, they can disrupt the natural flow of energy. Avoid placing mirrors directly opposite the bed, as this can cause restlessness during sleep and create unnecessary emotional tension. If repositioning the mirror is not possible, covering it at night can help reduce its negative impact.

  • Colour and decor: Colour plays a subtle yet powerful role in setting the tone for any space, and the bedroom is no exception. Soft, warm tones like pinks, light reds, and peach hues foster affection and harmony. These colours are associated with love and emotional bonding, making them perfect for a couple’s bedroom. Shades of green, on the other hand, bring in a sense of healing and relaxation, contributing to physical and emotional well-being.

  • Avoid gadgets: While modern life often requires you to stay connected, it’s essential to minimise the presence of electronic devices in the bedroom. Electronics emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which can disrupt sleep patterns and cause unnecessary stress. Keep gadgets like phones, televisions, and computers away from the bed, or remove them entirely if possible. A serene, technology-free bedroom promotes better sleep and a deeper, more restful connection with your partner.
  • Artwork: The artwork in your bedroom should evoke feelings of peace, love, and togetherness. Consider adding images and frames that depict natural landscapes, serene environments, or couples in harmonious poses. Avoid artwork that portrays loneliness, aggression, or conflict, as these can affect the emotional energy in the room and negatively influence your relationship.
