Our thoughts flow as a river and most of us try to dam it, to stop it, to make it behave. But they keep flowing, regardless of our intentions. Jiddu Krishnamurti, an Indian philosopher, speaker, and writer who travelled the world exploring the nature of human consciousness, rejecting organised religion and dogma, believing that truth cannot be handed down by authority.
Krishnamurti emphasised self-awareness, freedom from conditioning, and the importance of observing the mind without distortion. His teachings continue to inspire spiritual seekers, thinkers, and psychologists alike. He once said, “Meditation is the understanding of the movement of thought, not its suppression.” Meditation, as Krishnamurti explains, is not a technique. It is a way of seeing. And when seeing is clear, peace follows without effort.
Krishnamurti says that meditation is not about forcing the mind to be quiet. Thoughts are natural; they move just like breath or waves. Trying to stop them is like trying to stop the wind with your hands. Instead, meditation means noticing how thoughts appear, change, and disappear. You don’t chase them, and you don’t push them away. You simply watch. When you observe thoughts closely, you begin to see that they are reactions built from memory, fear, desire, and habit. They are not orders you must follow. They are just movements passing through the mind.
The quote teaches that control creates conflict. When you fight your thoughts, you strengthen them. While suppression may look peaceful on the outside, but inside it builds pressure. Instead, understanding brings a different kind of calm. When you clearly see how a thought works, it loses its power over you. There is no need to force silence; silence arrives naturally when there is clarity. Another lesson is self-freedom. The mind stops being a battlefield and becomes something you can learn from. You realise you are not your thoughts, you are the awareness watching them.
