Adi Shankaracharya was an Indian philosopher and spiritual leader of the 8th century, credited with reviving Advaita Vedanta. His teachings focus on the unity of the Self and the eternal truth beyond appearances.
A popular quote by the spritual leader goes, “Like the appearance of silver in mother of pearl, the world seems real until the Self, the underlying reality, is realised,” Through this quote Shankaracharya suggests that this reality is merely a reflection, a surface appearance. The world is not false, but it is not the ultimate truth either. We live as if the shine is the substance, forgetting that it is simply light playing on layers of nacre. Until we awaken to the Self, we mistake the surface for the depth.
Shankaracharya says that our perception is shaped by what we see, hear, and feel. The world feels solid because our mind has been trained to believe it is. We attach our identity to titles, possessions, relationships, and achievements. But just as the silver is not the actual shell, these external things are not our true essence. The Self is the underlying reality; unchanging, steady, and always present. Only when we realise this do we stop mistaking appearances for truth.
In modern life, stress and anxiety often come from believing that happiness depends on external validation. But when you realise the Self, you begin to understand that you are not defined by your circumstances. You become less reactive, less fearful, and more centred. The world still changes, but your sense of self does not wobble with every shift.
