This year, an interesting trend to watch out for is Indian bridal fashion revolution hitting its peak with maximalist trends. Not just in terms of colours or cuts, but the return of voluminous gowns and lehengas for big fat Indian wedding seems to be the latest norm for Indian brides. Brides are moving towards heavily embroidered lehengas and gowns with intricate designs and luxurious fabrics to make their wedding memories grander than ever.

Young brides are wholeheartedly embracing the grandeur and opulence that define traditional bridal fashion, and colours like red, maroon, green, and gold have made a vibrant comeback, setting the stage for spectacular weddings filled with rich, cultural aesthetics. According to designer Nilesh Mahajan, founder of fashion label Tanaksh, the Indian bridal market is currently witnessing a resurgence of traditional colors and old-world jewellery. “This maximalist trend focuses on techniques like zardozi, ari, and hand embroidery are being extensively used to create stunning pieces. These traditional arts add a touch of heritage and bespoke craftsmanship to bridal wear. Fabrics like silks, velvets, and brocades are favoured for their opulent texture and ability to hold elaborate embroidery. And, heavy embellishments with sequins, beads, and stones are used to enhance the overall extravagance of the bridal attire,” he says.

The designer recently showcased his bridal collection titled “Zaria by Tanaksh” and showcased a beautiful line of sophisticated designs that blended rich traditions of Indian heritage with contemporary aesthetics. The showstopper for his show, actress Sakshi Malik showcased an elaborate Indian bridal look in lehenga choli and dupatta in rich Indian colours like red, green and gold. She paired her outfit with heavy vintage jewellery and charmed the audience in ethnic grandeur and artisanal brilliance, narrating a story through exquisite details and modern silhouettes. Calling his collection an “homage to India's sartorial legacy,” Nilesh mentions, “From detailed embroidered lehengas to diaphanous sarees adorned with hues of royalty, each creation is a labour of love depicting timeless elegance. With Zaria, Tanaksh redefines luxury ethnic wear, presenting an avant-garde vision that honours India’s sartorial legacy while embracing a distinctive, ethnically-modern flair.”

For young brides-to-be and bridesmaid, here are some interesting ideas to try out the maximalist bridal trends for various functions.

For Sangeet and cocktails: The pre-wedding functions call for a blend of tradition and contemporary style. Indo-western gowns and dhoti pants are gaining popularity for their chic and comfortable appeal. Experiment with different draping styles for your dupatta to add a unique touch to your bridal look. Choose outfits that complement the bride’s attire without overshadowing it. Coordinated colors and themes can create a cohesive look.

For wedding day: Opt for rich colours like deep red, maroon, emerald green, or gold. Choose heavy embroideries like zardozi or hand embroidery to showcase traditional craftsmanship. Consider a mix of traditional and modern elements, such as pairing a classic lehenga with a contemporary blouse design.

For dance and mehendi ceremonies: Combining traditional motifs with western silhouettes in dhoti pants and gowns are a smart way to for a wedding weekend. Paired with crop tops or embellished jackets, dhoti pants provide a fusion look that is stylish and comfortable, perfect for dancing the night away at the mehendi ceremony. And, Indo-western gowns or lehengas with lighter embroidery can be ideal for bridesmaids or the family of the bride for pre-wedding ceremonies.
