Diwali is a time of joy, family gatherings, and celebrations that may also include travel. From heading to relatives' or friends’ homes to taking a vacation, packing for the festivities can be a challenge. Also, during this festival the tradition of gifting is a heartfelt way to share joy and blessings. You may exchange sweets, decorative items, and meaningful gifts with your loved ones to strengthen your bond and express love.

As you pack for your upcoming trip, remember that these gifts represent your affection and goodwill, adding to the festive spirit, says Naina Parekh, Founder, EUME, Mumbai. She shares effective travel packing tips on making the most of your space while keeping things organised and manageable:

  • Opt for spacious, lightweight luggage: Choose a soft-sided suitcase that is lightweight but has enough room to accommodate your clothes, gifts, and any souvenirs you might pick up. Look for a bag that includes pockets for easy organization, such as a duffle bag with side compartments.

  • Use built-in compartments: Select a suitcase with a separate shoe compartment to keep your shoes from dirtying your clothes. Use designated pockets for chargers and electronics, ensuring everything is easily accessible when you arrive.

  • Pack with compression: Use compression packing cubes for your traditional outfits, allowing you to fit more into your luggage while keeping everything organized. This way, you can maximise space for additional festive items or gifts you may acquire during your travels.

  • Roll your clothes: Roll up your kurtas and sarees instead of folding them. This method not only saves space but also minimises wrinkles, making it easy to look polished for any Diwali gathering without the need for ironing.

  • Choose expandable sections: Opt for a suitcase that features an expandable zipper section. This will come in handy if you plan to bring back sweets or gifts from relatives, providing extra space without compromising on style or comfort.

  • Smart packing accessories: Invest in a jewelry organiser with padded slots for your earrings and necklaces. This will prevent tangling and ensure your accessories arrive safely, ready to complement your festive outfits.

  • Layer for versatility: Pack a lightweight cardigan or shawl that can be layered over different outfits. This allows you to transition from a daytime celebration to an evening event with ease, maximising the versatility of your wardrobe.
  • Compact gift packing: For Diwali gifts like homemade sweets or small decorative items, use small gift bags or boxes that can be tucked into corners of your suitcase. This keeps your gifts protected and prevents them from getting crushed during travel.
