Velvet, the winter fabric that owns festive fashion in India, is back in vogue

The rich velvet fabric is no longer reserved for bridal trunks or once-a-year occasions. Whether it’s a classic sharara, a tailored velvet kurta, or a statement co-ord set, velvet proves that winter dressing can be warm and undeniably glamorous.

  • Velvet is trending for festive and wedding wear, offering comfort and luxury.
  • Designers modernize velvet with lighter cuts, versatile pieces, and practical details.
  • Jewel tones and monotone velvet outfits trend with metallic footwear.

As winter deepens and the festive and wedding calendar fills up, dressing up no longer needs to mean compromising on comfort. Rich textures, indulgent layers and luxurious fabrics take centre stage, and leading the comeback is velvet. Plush, dramatic and unapologetically festive, velvet is once again the fabric of choice for celebrations that call for impact.

Velvet feels

This season, designers are reimagining velvet beyond heavy bridal lehengas and introducing lighter constructions, contemporary cuts and versatile separates that work across occasions. From intimate mehendi nights to grand reception soirées, velvet brings warmth, depth and old-world charm, while still feeling thoroughly modern when styled right.

One silhouette that continues to dominate festive wardrobes is the velvet sharara suit. The combination of a short kurta with wide, flared sharara pants creates a regal, almost cinematic look. Velvet adds depth to the ensemble, while details like zari work, delicate thread embroidery or tonal hand embellishment make it occasion-ready without looking excessive.

A deep wine, emerald green, midnight blue or classic black velvet sharara feels timeless and grand. For those who prefer softer tones, dusty rose, champagne gold and muted plums are emerging as modern alternatives.

You can opt for a structured kurta with traditional necklines like boat, sweetheart, or high round necks, or choose contemporary cuts with asymmetric hems and subtle slits for a more fashion-forward feel.

To dupatta or not?

Designers are including practical details like side pockets in shararas and kurtas, making these festive outfits as functional as they are beautiful. A velvet suit with a statement dupatta like organza with gota borders, sheer net with sequin detailing, or Banarasi silkworks beautifully.

But for cocktail-style events or smaller gatherings, skipping the dupatta altogether gives the look a modern, effortless edge.

Jewelled tones are having a major moment. Ruby red, sapphire blue, amethyst purple and deep teal look especially striking in velvet because the fabric naturally enhances colour depth. Monotone dressing and wearing the same colour head-to-toe adds instant.

If you prefer balance, break the richness with contrast accessories like antique gold jewellery against emerald velvet, or pearl accents with burgundy tones.

Slaying velvet looks

Velvet outfits pair best with footwear that complements their richness. Metallic juttis in gold, bronze or pewter are perfect for traditional occasions, adding comfort without sacrificing elegance. For taller silhouettes or contemporary settings, shimmering wedge heels or delicate block heels work beautifully, especially with shararas that allow just a glimpse of footwear beneath the hem.

For make-up, opt for soft glam makeup like luminous skin, warm bronzed eyes, subtle shimmer on the lids and a defined lash. For lips, choose based on your outfit tone like a bold berry with jewel shades, or a nude-rose with darker colours. Hair can go two ways: A sleek low bun or soft chignon complements traditional velvet suits. For more relaxed functions, loose waves or a half-up hairstyle keeps the look fresh and effortless.
