Holi arrives as a burst of colour — and with it, the first true hint of summer. The air feels warmer, afternoons stretch longer, and wardrobes naturally shift toward lighter, breathable fabrics. When it comes to dressing for Holi parties and festive get-togethers, nothing rivals the ease and elegance of crisp cottons and natural weaves.
Cotton, one of the oldest and most integral fabrics in India’s textile history, has been woven and worn for festivals for centuries. Its lightweight, breathable nature makes it practical for colour play under the sun, while its effortless grace keeps it festive. For Holi, it remains the gold standard with its timeless appeal.

There’s something eternally charming about wearing white on Holi. A crisp white kurta set becomes a living canvas, slowly transforming as gulal settles into soft pinks, yellows, and blues. It feels fresh, breathable, and understatedly elegant. Behroze Singh, founder of Cottons Jaipur, explains, “The key is to play with subtle layers and thoughtful accessories rather than over-styling. Hand-block printed dupattas, stoles, or scarves add visual interest while keeping the look comfortable and season-appropriate. Accessories should remain minimal - oxidised silver jewellery, classic juttis or kolhapuris which complement the softness of white.”
A flowy white cotton kurta paired with relaxed straight pants or palazzos keeps the silhouette easy. Add a lightweight hand-block dupatta for texture and sun protection. Men can opt for a white cotton kurta with tapered pyjamas or relaxed trousers, finished with tan kolhapuris for earthy balance.
For Holi 2026, fashion is evolving beyond just whites toward a broader, more expressive palette. While classic white cotton remains a foundational canvas, especially for daytime celebrations trend forecasts for Spring–Summer 2026 show a broader palette gaining prominence. Singh adds, “Soft pastels, fresh romantic hues like blush pink and cloud dancer white, and vivid tones such as sunshine yellow and cerulean blue that reflect an optimistic, mood-boosting spirit. 2026 also sees a rise in jewel tones and richer hues from vibrant reds and greens to deeper indigos and warm corals - especially for evening Holi gatherings and festive get-togethers, striking a balance between tradition and contemporary style.”
To keep the look modern, experiment with silhouettes, here are some interesting ways to style for a fun and festive look.
1. Try an oversized cotton shirt-kurta tucked slightly into high-waisted trousers. Layer a short cotton jacket over a monochrome set for added structure.
2. Women can also style cotton saris with sleeveless blouses or crop tops for a playful spin.
3. Pastel kurtas in blush pink or powder blue feel light and celebratory for daytime brunches. Sunshine yellow cotton co-ords add cheer without overwhelming.
4. For evening get-togethers, jewel-toned cotton-silk blends in emerald or indigo bring depth while remaining breathable.
5. Men can roll up sleeves, layer with a lightweight Nehru jacket, or choose kurtas with subtle thread detailing for character.
6. Don’t shy away from mixing textures like a soft cotton base with a slightly textured stole adds dimension.
