Marking the onset of spring in India, the Basant Panchmi festival brings with it a renewed appetite for lightness: Of colour, fabric, and mood. It’s also the perfect moment to reach for sarees that feel breathable, fluid and joyful. This season, fashion is leaning decisively towards mulmul, cotton and linen sarees while aligning beautifully with modern styling.
Spring dressing is less about grandeur and more about grace, and here’s how you can make the most of it with soft sarees.
As temperatures begin to climb, comfort becomes central to style choices. Mulmul sarees, with their cloud-like softness, allow the skin to breathe while offering effortless drape. Cotton sareees lend structure without stiffness, making them ideal for long festive days, work meetings, temple visits or leisurely lunches. Linen, with its understated texture, brings a quiet sophistication that feels contemporary yet deeply rooted.

These fabrics don’t demand heavy styling. Instead, they invite thoughtful draping, personal expression and intelligent pairing. “Spring sarees are about clean drapes and intelligent styling,” Sujata Biswas, co-founder of Suta, tells Moneycontrol. She adds, “Airy cotton and mulmul sarees work best when paired with well-made cotton blouses or subtle floral prints, letting the colour and texture of the fabric take centre stage. Comfort is key and sneakers with sarees are no longer experimental but practical. Avoid over-pinning; play with the palla by keeping it loose, wrapping it around the neck, or letting it fall naturally. Mulmul sarees also pair beautifully with T-shirts or crop tops, making them easy, breathable, and perfect for long summer days.”
This season marks a decisive shift in how the saree is being designed and consumed by young women. The Gen Z is moving from excess to mindful elegance where the saree is chosen as a long-term wardrobe investment, believes Taniya Biswas, co-founder of Suta.

Speaking about the spring trends, she mentions, “Colour palettes have become calmer but more confident. Soft pastels, grounded neutrals, sun-warmed brights and deep jewel tones are leading because they age well. These are colours women can return to again and again, across years and occasions, without them feeling dated or tied to a single moment. Silhouettes are following the same philosophy. There’s a clear move towards fluidity and ease, sarees that breathe, move and stay comfortable through long hours.”
For Basant Panchmi, this translates beautifully into lemon yellows, marigold hues, powder blues, soft ivories and tender floral colours that echo the season without overwhelming it.
The modern saree is no longer reserved for a single occasion. It is increasingly seen as a foundation piece: Something to be styled, restyled and reinterpreted across moments. Handwoven cottons, mul, silk-cotton blends, linen and lighter silks are becoming central because they feel good on the body and hold relevance beyond trend cycles.
This approach has also reshaped bridal and festive styling. “Modern brides and wedding guests are increasingly approaching sarees with a repurposing mindset,” inform the founders. The duo mentions the modern brides are using saree as a foundation garment and styling it differently across moments. They add, “A festive saree can be worn traditionally for the main ceremony, re-draped as a dhoti or skirt for pre-wedding events, paired with a kurta or jacket for intimate gatherings, or styled with tailored separates for a contemporary evening look.”
