In the modern hustle of corporate environments, the importance of mental well-being has taken center stage. Employers are realising that nurturing the mental health of their employees is not just a perk but a necessity. This realisation has led to a surge in the creation of wellness rooms within workplace as dedicated sanctuaries where employees can unwind, relax, and rejuvenate.
Creating wellness rooms in a workplace involves a blend of functionality and aesthetics aimed at promoting relaxation and mental rejuvenation. The key is to design spaces that foster a sense of calm and tranquility amidst the busy work environment, says architect Nilanjan Bhowal, principal architect and founder of Design Consortium. To create such peaceful rooms in a busy space, the expert advices, “Incorporate elements from nature such as indoor plants, natural wood accents, stone textures and flowing water by creating a small fountain, sound of water to evoke a sense of serenity and calmness. Opt for ergonomic furniture like plush sofas, cozy armchairs, and soft cushions to encourage relaxation. And, choose calming colours like soft blues, greens, and earthy tones to create a soothing atmosphere.”
A smart way to make it more interactive is by allowing employees to personalise the space with items like inspirational quotes, artwork, or photos that resonate with them. In modern work spaces, dedicated spaces for relaxation and meditation are essential for promoting mental well-being in the workplace. These areas should be designed to provide privacy and tranquility, allowing employees to unwind and recharge.
Lighting and sound play crucial roles in shaping the atmosphere of wellness rooms. The goal is to create a harmonious environment that promotes relaxation and mental well-being, through the auditory and olfactory senses. Maximise natural light by positioning wellness rooms near windows or using skylights to create a connection with the outdoors. Bhowal says, “Plan and designate quiet areas where employees can retreat for meditation or quiet reflection away from the noise of the office and a green space to overlook. Provide comfortable seating options such as floor cushions, meditation mats, or reclining chairs to encourage relaxation. For lighting, use soft, diffused lighting sources like floor lamps or string lights to create a calming ambiance. Cut the hustle-bustle and stress with auditory experiences such as meditative melodies, scented candles, and aroma diffusers. Incorporate sound-absorbing materials like acoustic panels or rugs to minimise noise and create a peaceful environment.”
For home offices, one can install dimmable lights or smart lighting systems that allow employees to adjust the brightness according to their preferences. Use warm colour temperature bulbs to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Ensure that wellness rooms are adequately soundproofed to minimise external disturbances and create a peaceful retreat.
