For both men and women of all ages, hair colouring has become a part of personal care routine. From covering greys to trying out new looks that complement your style, the use of hair colour products has grown considerably over the years. Though they’re made to be safer and more effective than ever before, when it comes to hair dye, health concerns haven’t gone away.

“Hair dyes, on the whole, are safe if applied properly but repeated or inappropriate use of hair dye can pose its own avoidable risks," said Dr Radhika Narang, Consultant- Dermatologist and Hair Health Specialist. It is important to know how hair dyes react on the scalp and understand the type of dye used, frequency of application, personal sensitivity and how much protection is given to potential health impact.

How Hair Colouring Can Impact Health

Hair colorants are products containing chemicals which modify the natural pigment of the hair. Permanent hair dyes contain ammonia and hydrogen peroxide, which open cuticles and contain molecules to turn the hair colour, these can sometimes irritate the scalp, make it dry and lead to brittleness of the hair shaft. For those who are sensitive, allergic reactions – itching, redness, swelling, rashes, on the skin can be caused from substances such as paraphenylenediamine (PPD).

Potential Long-Term Concerns

Continual exposure to harsh chemicals contributes to chronic scalp sensitivity, hair breakage and more severe issues such as thinning. While there have been no definitive studies which could link occasional use of hair dyes with serious systemic health risk, long term and excessive exposure may potentially increase the possibility of skin issues.

How to Decrease the Health Risks

-Patch test before you dye every time, at least 24–48 hours before you dye your hair

-Minimize how often you colour to prevent the chemical burden

-Avoid using ammonia-free or herbal dyes if possible

-Please read and follow instructions carefully. Do not leave longer than recommended time.

-Wear gloves that is available during application.

-Regularly moisturize and condition to keep scalp and hair healthy

When to Consult a Doctor
