  • The olive oil and lemon shot trend lacks scientific backing
  • Consistent use may help skin, but instant results are unlikely
  • Excess lemon or olive oil can cause acidity or weight gain

Whenever a lifestyle or beauty influencer shares a hack that comes with the promise of boosting skin glow and making hair stronger, a lot of people invariably feel tempted to try the hack themselves. Recently, the two content creators Kateri and Isabelle, the duo behind Everything Krause, introduced a new morning ritual that involves extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon.

"The lemon olive oil shot is worth the hype... starting your morning with fresh lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil is truly one of the simplest habits you can add to your routine," one of the sisters shared with their followers.

The hack involves mixing 1 to 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil with 1 to 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and drink it on an empty stomach in morning. The post highlighted that the viral shot helps reduce bloating, promote clear skin, grow thicker and shiner hair, air with liver detoxification and lymphatic drainage and much more.

Moneycontrol team spoke to Ms Anuja Gaur , visiting consultant, weight management and diet therapy, Aakash Healthcare, to understand whether the viral shot is worth giving a try, or something one should stay away from.

"The viral trend about taking olive oil and lemon shots that claims to be great for your skin and digestion does not have any scientific backing. Olive oil has healthy fats and lemon has vitamin C and it can be good for your skin, but the results are usually slow. So, the videos showing instant glow after having the shot is not something people should fall for," Gaur added.

"Can improve skin health..."

Olive oil and lemon can help to improve your skin health, said Gaur. "When combined together, they give your skin vitamin E, vitamin C and antioxidants which help to hydrate your skin and boost collagen. One needs to be consistent with the consumption of shot to see the benefits," she added.

"Excess lemon juice can cause acidity..."

Gaur warned that when one has excess lemon juice, it can end up irritating your stomach, or cause acidity. "Plus, olive oil when had in excess can lead to weight gain, as it has lot of calories. Other issues that could crop up are digestive issues, acid reflux or damage to tooth enamel from have lemon juice too often," she added.

Who should try this shot and who should stay away

A healthy person can have this shot once in a while they like it. For those with conditions like stomach problems, acid reflux or who are weight conscious should be careful when taking these shots more often, Gaur concluded.
