A recent study published in the Lancet Public Health sheds light on troubling trends in cancer rates across generations in the United States. The research reveals a significant rise in cases of 17 cancer types, with some forms showing 2–3 times higher rates in individuals born in 1990 compared to those born in 1955. This alarming increase highlights the urgent need to understand the underlying causes.

While the study emphasises that further research is necessary, it identifies obesity, dietary changes, and environmental toxins as key factors contributing to these rising cancer rates. The findings underscore the importance of addressing these issues through public health initiatives and preventive strategies to mitigate future cancer risk and enhance overall well-being.

Here are eight potential reasons why millennials might be more prone to cancer, along with strategies for prevention suggested by Delhi-based oncologist Dr Sushma Shrivastava.

Lifestyle choices

Reason: Increased consumption of processed foods, higher alcohol consumption, and smoking can elevate cancer risks.

Prevention: Adopt a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit alcohol intake and avoid smoking. Regular exercise also helps maintain a healthy weight.

Sedentary lifestyle

Reason: Prolonged periods of inactivity due to desk jobs and sedentary leisure activities can increase cancer risk.

Prevention: Incorporate physical activity into daily routines. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.

Exposure to environmental toxins

Reason: Increased exposure to pollutants, chemicals, and toxins in urban environments can contribute to cancer risk.

Prevention: Minimise exposure to known carcinogens by using natural cleaning products, reducing pollution exposure, and staying informed.

About environmental risks

Stress and mental health:

Reason: Chronic stress and mental health issues can impact immune function and contribute to cancer development.

Prevention: Practice stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga, and counselling. Prioritise mental health and seek professional help when needed.

Genetic predispositions

Reason: Some millennials may inherit genetic mutations that increase cancer susceptibility.

Prevention: Regular screenings and genetic counselling can help identify risks early. Discuss family history with a healthcare provider to tailor preventive measures.

Delayed childbearing and reproductive health

Reason: Delayed childbearing and reproductive health issues can impact cancer risk, particularly for breast and ovarian cancers.

Prevention: Maintain regular gynaecological check-ups and discuss reproductive health concerns with a healthcare provider. Consider early screening if there are known risk factors.

Poor sleep patterns

Reason: Irregular sleep patterns and insufficient sleep can disrupt hormonal balance and increase cancer risk.

Prevention: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Establish a regular sleep schedule and practice good sleep hygiene.

Lack of preventive healthcare

Reason: Millennials might delay or skip preventive health screenings and check-ups due to busy lifestyles or financial constraints.

Prevention: Prioritise regular health check-ups and screenings. Stay informed about recommended preventive measures and vaccines.

General prevention strategies:

Healthy diet: Focus on a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Regular exercise: Engage in physical activity regularly to maintain overall health.

Routine screenings: Follow recommended screening guidelines for early detection.

Avoid known carcinogens: Limit exposure to harmful substances and environmental toxins.

Educate yourself: Stay informed about health risks and preventive measures.
