Discover how small Ayurvedic habits — neem & turmeric balls, soaked nuts, sprouted fenugreek — form the backbone of Sadhguru’s energising morning ritual.

The spiritual leader Sadhguru (Jaggi Vasudev) has a morning ritual that has its roots in Ayurvedic and yoga traditions. His method emphasises mindful practices and simple, whole foods over elaborate meals. If you’re looking to start your day grounded, here’s what he does — and how you might adapt it for your life.

What He Eats First Thing

Neem and Turmeric Balls: On an empty stomach, Sadhguru takes small marble-sized balls made of neem leaves and turmeric. These are thought to reduce inflammation, kill harmful microbes, and clean the alimentary canal.
Sprouted fenugreek (Methi): Sprouting increases nutrients and decreases bitterness. Fenugreek is used for cellular cleansing and balancing digestion.
Soaked Groundnuts: Groundnuts soaked for 6-8 hours are part of his ritual. Soaking reduces certain compounds that might cause digestive discomfort, increases bioavailability of nutrients, and gives good quality protein.

Adjusting According to the Day’s Activities

Sadhguru eats based on the nature of the activities planned for the day:

In the case of some physical activities, he may add some rice, chapatti, or idli, which are classified as light carbohydrates. These are very useful for movement.

In the case of mental activities of less movement, he prefers light foods like millet or a porridge-like drink. These are easier to digest and do not burden the system excessively.

He observes fasting periods as well, from time to time when he has one major meal a day to allow the body to recuperate, as for the rest of the day he does not eat anything.

Ayurvedic Benefits

Digestive health: Turmeric and neem are well known in Ayurveda, and the antimicrobial and inflammation qualities of each of them assists in keeping the gut healthy as well as helps in its cleansing.

Balanced energy and clarity: A steady energy level which does not have surges is given by a combination of soaking nuts, methi sprouts, and thoughtful, purposeful eating.

Effects of fasting: In general, fasting periods should increase metabolic flexibility and rest the digestive system. Some studies say that mental clarity also improves. However, fasting should match each person's unique health status, which is where the experts have issues.

How You Could Try It at Home

Here are ideas to adapt his routine safely:

  • Begin with warm or tepid water. Then neem + turmeric ball or chew a few neem leaves (if accessible).
  • Try soaking a handful of groundnuts overnight, drain and eat in morning. Optionally pair with a piece of fruit like banana.
  • Sprout some fenugreek seeds the previous night; have a few sprouts first thing.
  • If you plan a busy or physical day, have a light carb (whole-grain) breakfast. Otherwise, stick to lighter foods until later.
  • Always listen to your body; if something feels harsh (like neem might for sensitive stomachs), go gradually. Consult a health professional especially if you have medical conditions or are on medication.
