When it comes to workout hacks to lose weight, there's simply no dearth. The recent one to gain traction is jeffing. This is a walk-run fitness trend that involves running for some time and then brisk walking. This technique was popularized by late Olympic distance runner Jeff Galloway. Apparently, there are many benefits of trying this workout trend.
Wondering why this trend is called jeffing? Well, this trend emerged from a social media group called Run Mummy Run. Running was popular among mothers who were looking to become fit and healthy. Jeff once revealed, "A few of these women discovered my run walk run method and gave it the nickname - Jeffing - because I invented it."
It's basically a 30-30 method wherein a person runs for 30 seconds and then walks for 30 seconds. Moneycontrol team spoke to Dt Ginni Kalra, head dietetics, Aakash Healthcare, to understand more about this trend and whether it can help one lose weight.
"The trend is simple and practical. Not everyone can suddenly start running 5 kilometres, so mixing walking and running makes it manageable to achieve fitness goals. Many people quit exercise, because it feels too hard. This method makes it less scary and more sustainable. At the end of the day, any trend that gets people moving regularly is a good thing," shared Dt Kalra.
“Yes, it can help. When you alternate between walking and running, you burn more calories than by just walking slowly. But I always tell my patients — exercise alone is not enough. If your diet is high in sugar and processed food, weight loss will be difficult. Jeffing works best when combined with balanced eating and consistency," Dt Kalra told Moneycontrol.
"The biggest advantage of jeffing is that it’s easier on the joints than continuous running. It improves stamina and heart health without putting too much pressure on the body. It’s also beginner-friendly. The downside is that some people may overdo it and get knee or ankle pain," she concluded.

1. What is “jeffing”?
“Jeffing” refers to a run-walk technique where you alternate periods of running with periods of walking during a workout. It’s a structured form of interval training originally developed by olympic athlete jeff galloway (run-walk-run method).
2. Is jeffing a weight-loss diet?
No. Jeffing isn’t a diet — it’s a cardiovascular exercise strategy. While cardio can help with weight loss as part of a broader fitness plan, jeffing itself is not a specific eating plan.
3. How does jeffing help with weight loss?
By making intense exercise more approachable, jeffing can help you move more consistently and burn calories. Better adherence to regular aerobic activity often helps create the calorie deficit needed for weight loss.
4. Do you have to run really fast to benefit?
No — jeffing works even at moderate paces. The run intervals are not sprints; they’re meant to be sustainable, and you can adjust walk/run durations to your ability.
5. Is jeffing suitable for beginners?
Yes. Because it alternates walking with running, it’s considered beginner-friendly and less intimidating than nonstop running. Plus, it reduces strain and fatigue.
