Most people think of granolas as healthy breakfast options, and why not? They have oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits that are considered to be good for your body. However, packaged granolas have hidden sugars, fats, and high calories that do more damage than you might think.

French biochemist Jessie Inchauspé took to her Instagram account and shared that store-bought granolas aren’t as healthy as they are made out to be. Consuming them in the morning can cause several health issues, including blood sugar spikes, which play havoc with your system.

“I know the packaging pretends it’s a health food but honestly, it’s just glucose, and having that first thing in the morning is going to send you on a glucose roller coaster, meaning brain fog, fatigue, hunger, and cravings,” she warned.

But does that mean you do away with them entirely? She suggested, “If you want something sweet-tasting that doesn’t spike your glucose, make sure it’s centred around proteins with healthy fats and fibre and nothing sweet except whole fruit.”

Jessie went on to share her homemade no-spike granola recipe, which is also part of her second book ‘The Glucose Goddess Method’.

Ingredients

  • Coconut oil: 1 tsp
  • Cinnamon: 1½ tsp
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pumpkin seeds: 100 gm
  • Pecans: 50 gm
  • Almonds or hazelnuts: 50 gm
  • Greek yoghurt
  • Handful of berries

Instructions:
  • Melt coconut oil in a bowl, stir in cinnamon + a pinch of salt.
  • Add pumpkin seeds, pecans + almonds/hazelnuts, and coat well.
  • Spread on baking paper and toast in the oven for 7 mins at 200°C (400°F).
  • Let it cool, take 3 big tbsp, and serve with Greek yogurt + berries.
  • (PS: Keep in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks)

Many agreed with Jessie in the comments, including gut specialist, Dr Nate Fulton, who wrote, "Love this. Most granolas are blood sugar landmines, oats, syrup, and dried fruit with zero protein or fat to buffer the spike.”

“This version actually supports metabolic health instead of wrecking it. Cinnamon for insulin sensitivity, healthy fats for satiety, and Greek yogurt for protein? That’s how you build a nervous system-safe breakfast that fuels instead of crashes,” he added.
