The monsoon is here, and with it, the much awaited respite from heat, more chai- pakoras, and better evenings. However, along with this relief, comes a seasonal surge in infections. From cough and cold to stomach bugs, simple mistakes can make you ill.

Every year we see a spike in viral infections, food poisoning, and fungal issues during the rains, says Dr Gur Pratap Singh, MD (Physician) at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. “While majority of these are preventable, one has to be careful with one’s health," he cautions.

People often underestimate how vulnerable their bodies can be during weather changes, especially in the humid, rain-soaked monsoon. “It’s not just about getting wet. It is about how you eat, what you touch, and how long you stay in damp clothes. The rise in infections during this season isn’t coincidental, it’s directly tied to certain daily habits,” says Dr Singh.

From street-side temptations to poor hygiene practices, even things that feel harmless can compromise immunity. Therefore avoiding common mistakes can help you stay safe, and still enjoy the rain.

Dr Singh recommends the following habits to avoid during the monsoon to keep infections at bay:

  • Eating street food and fried snacks in the open: Tempting as they are, most street foods are exposed to flies and moisture, making them unsafe. “Bacteria thrive in these conditions. Stick to hot, home-cooked food during the rains,” Dr Singh says.

  • Consuming stale or leftover food: Humidity accelerates spoilage. Even a day-old curry can turn dangerous. “Always check for signs of spoilage, and if reheating, ensure it’s piping hot,” advises Dr Singh. Better yet, cook fresh and eat soon after.

  • Skipping hand hygiene: You touch countless contaminated surfaces daily. Not washing your hands before eating or after being outdoors is a major cause of stomach and viral infections. Handwashing is your best defence.

  • Wearing damp clothes or wet socks: Remaining in damp clothes can lead to skin infections and even chills. Dr Singh suggests, “Change out of wet clothes quickly, and dry your feet properly to avoid fungal trouble,” the expert says.

  • Drinking water from public sources: Contaminated water is one of the top culprits behind monsoon illnesses. “Carry your own bottle, and if unsure, opt for boiled or filtered water only,” warns Dr Singh.
