Each year, millions of people around the world have a stroke, an often disabling and sometimes fatal disruption in blood flow to the brain. That disruption can be caused by a clot that blocks blood flow to the brain (an ischemic stroke) or by bleeding into or around the brain when a brain artery bursts (a hemorrhagic stroke). When brain cells are starved of oxygen and nutrients, they die within minutes, so rapid medical attention is essential.
Many people unfortunately disregard early warning symptoms, which are often put down to just being tired or dehydrated or “just weakness”. Timely interventions are important as the risk of permanent brain injury, chronic disability or death increases with delayed treatment.
“Early identification and prompt treatment are crucial and significantly aid in better recovery and less complications,” says Dr Amit Batra, Director – Neurology, Max Super Speciality Hospital Patparganj.

Sudden dropping objects, difficulty buttoning a shirt, or trouble holding a cup, writing etc may indicate weakness on one side of the body particularly the hand and is a stroke symptom. It is mostly attributed to some nerve compression or having slept on the same side.
If one side of the face appears uneven when smiling, or the lips droop, this could indicate facial weakness.
People often blame stress or tiredness, sleepiness for speech changes. However, sudden difficulty speaking, wrong choice of words, problems with naming or understanding language may reflect damage to language centres in the left half of the brain. The speech may otherwise be normal in content but may become slurred or difficult to understand by the listener, indicating a problem with the speech centres in the brain or due to facial weakness.
Sudden blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision in one eye is sometimes attributed to eye strain. In reality, it may signal reduced blood flow to visual pathways or visual centres in the back of the brain.

Unexplained sudden loss of coordination or trouble walking, needing support to walk can result from stroke affecting the balance centres in the cerebellum or brainstem, and may also be associated with vertigo/vomiting.
If symptoms appear suddenly — even if they seem mild — call emergency services immediately. In stroke care, for every minute we delay treatment, millions of brain cells die, hence remember time is brain.
1. Can brain stroke symptoms be mild?
Yes, symptoms can be mild and are often overlooked, but they still require immediate medical attention.
2. Are vision problems always related to the eyes?
No, sudden vision changes may indicate a stroke affecting the visual centres in the brain.
3. Why is rapid treatment important in stroke cases?
Rapid treatment is crucial because delaying treatment increases the risk of permanent brain injury, chronic disability, or death.
4. What should I do if I notice these symptoms?
Call emergency services immediately if you notice any sudden symptoms, even if they seem mild.
