If you love adding sugar to your beverages, smoothies, and desserts, there are better alternatives you can opt for. These are healthier, have minimal impact on your blood sugar levels, and support cognitive health.

Neuroscientist Robert WB Love took to his Instagram account and, in his new post, shared that people with Type 2 diabetes have a significantly increased risk of Alzheimer’s, approximately 30 to 60 per cent, depending on the data being considered.

“So it’s really important that if you want to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, you keep your blood sugar low. Here are three sweeteners that are not only delicious, but also do not spike blood sugar and are not damaging to your brain,” he said.

3 sweeteners that don’t cause a big glucose spike

Allulose

He said, “It is a rare sugar found in mulberries, figs, and maple syrup. It is 90 per cent fewer calories than regular sugar and it also doesn’t spike your blood sugar.” A Korean study shows that allulose is a safe, zero-calorie sugar substitute that helps with weight loss. This is because it balances blood sugar levels. It is, thus, ideal for diabetics and people on low-carb, keto diets.

Monk fruit

The neuroscientist said he prefers monk fruit in liquid form, which makes it easy to mix it in desserts, recipes, and smoothies. “Monk fruit sugar is super duper sweet and it doesn’t have that metallic taste of stevia,” he added. This one is considered to be a safe option for diabetics. It is anti-inflammatory, and since it has no calories or carbs, it can even promote weight loss.

Stevia

This one’s a natural non-nutritive option that many are already aware of. Robert said, “I like to do one drop of stevia, two drops of monk sugar and that gives a really nice mix of sweetness. That way it doesn’t taste too metallic or spike insulin or glucose.”
