The arrest of Hemlata Patkar in an alleged Rs 10 crore extortion case has brought sudden and intense attention to a name that once featured for very different reasons in the Marathi entertainment space.

From film interviews and dance performances to police custody and court hearings, Hemlata Patkar’s trajectory has taken a dramatic and unsettling turn.

Hemlata Patkar, also known as Hemlata Aditya Patkar or Hemlata Bane, is a Marathi actress who was active in the industry more than a decade ago.

She first came into the limelight around 2012 with the release of the Marathi film Lavu Ka Lath, where she played the lead role of Surekha, a Lavani performer.

At the time, film portals described her as a trained dancer who had previously appeared in item numbers and small character roles before landing her first major break.

Interviews from that period portrayed her as an ambitious artiste who had entered films through dance and stage performance rather than a conventional acting launch.

Though her acting career did not expand into mainstream stardom, Hemlata remained connected to the Marathi entertainment world. Over the years, her name largely stayed away from headlines until the current case thrust it back into public view under far more serious circumstances.

What has further amplified interest in the case is her family connection. Hemlata Patkar is the daughter-in-law of senior Marathi television actress Archana Patkar, a familiar face to TV audiences and best known for playing Kanchan Deshmukh in the long-running and popular serial Ai Kuthe Kay Karte. Following news of the arrest, discussions quickly spread across social media and industry circles, with many expressing shock over the link between a respected television actor’s family and a high-profile criminal investigation.

According to the Mumbai Crime Branch, Hemlata Patkar was arrested along with another accused after allegedly being caught red-handed while accepting Rs 1.5 crore, the first instalment of a Rs 10 crore ransom demanded from a Goregaon-based builder. The complainant, Arvind Goyal, has alleged that the money was demanded to settle a criminal case registered against his son at Amboli police station. Police have informed the court that Hemlata Patkar’s handwriting samples are yet to be collected and that she is not cooperating with the investigation.

Adding to her legal troubles, police also revealed that a previous criminal case under Sections 452, 323 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code had already been registered against her at the Meghwadi police station. Investigators are now examining whether she may have been involved in similar incidents earlier and whether more victims could be linked to the same alleged extortion network.

As the investigation continues, Hemlata Patkar remains in police custody, with her past as a Marathi film actress now standing in stark contrast to the serious allegations she faces today.
