As Salman Khan turns 60 today, the milestone inevitably brings back memories not just of his iconic journey in cinema, but also of moments that revealed the human stories behind Bollywood’s biggest stars. Among them is a deeply personal confession made years ago by Shah Rukh Khan, long before time softened edges and public reconciliations became possible.
The year was 2004. On Koffee With Karan, Shah Rukh spoke with rare honesty about friendship, guilt, and emotional distance. At the time, the visible strain between him and Salman Khan had become a subject of constant speculation, though neither actor addressed it publicly in detail.
When asked by Karan Johar whether Salman had an issue with him, Shah Rukh did not deny it or attempt to smooth things over.
“That’s what I said. I can’t keep friends. I don’t know how to keep friends,” he admitted. “I would not like to blame anyone for disliking me. I take all the credit for the fact that people love me. But if people dislike me, it has nothing to do with them. It’s all on me.”
He then named Salman directly, taking full responsibility for the rift. “If Salman Khan has an issue with me, 100 percent I have let him down,” Shah Rukh said, adding that he felt genuine sadness about disappointing people he cared for. “And I feel sad that I have let people down.”
What followed shifted the conversation from industry gossip to something far more intimate. Shah Rukh explained why apologising, despite understanding its importance, had become emotionally impossible for him.
“As much as I know how to say sorry, I can’t get myself to say sorry,” he said. “As much as I love hugging people, I can’t hug an old friend and say ‘come back to me’.”
The reason, he revealed, was rooted in loss. “Because I couldn’t do that with my parents. I hugged their dead bodies and told them to ‘come back to me’ and they didn’t. So I’ve lost that quality to call people back.”
He clarified that his words were not meant to create headlines or controversy. “This is not to create any kind of news byte,” he said. “But if Salman is disturbed with me, it’s got to do with me and he is completely in the right.”

Acknowledging his own emotional limitations, Shah Rukh added, “I wish I knew how to pick up a telephone and say sorry, but I don’t know how to say sorry and I am too old to learn that.”
Years later, actor Vishal Malhotra offered insight into that phase, recalling a tense moment at Riteish Deshmukh’s birthday party when both stars were present but reportedly not on speaking terms.
“There was definitely tension in the air because everyone knew what was going on between them,” Vishal said. “But one thing I know for a fact, neither Shah Rukh sir nor Salman sir has ever spoken negatively about each other in public.”
As Salman Khan celebrates his 60th birthday today, this throwback stands as a reminder that even the biggest superstars carry unresolved grief, pride, and emotional scars. Long before public warmth returned, the truth had already been spoken quietly, honestly, and without blame.
