On the occasion of Rahul Roy’s birthday, it feels fitting to revisit a deeply moving chapter from his life and career, one that revealed an unexpected act of kindness from Salman Khan and quietly challenged many public perceptions.
Rahul Roy, who became an overnight star after the blockbuster success of Aashiqui in 1990, went through a severe health crisis in 2020.
While shooting for LAC – Live the Battle in Kargil, the actor suffered a brain stroke and was immediately rushed to hospital. He underwent angiography of both the brain and heart at Wockhardt Hospital and was later shifted to the ICU at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, where he remained under intensive medical care.
During a candid interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rahul Roy revealed that Salman Khan stepped in during this difficult phase and paid his pending medical bills. Expressing his gratitude, Rahul said, “Sab kehte hai Salman ye hai, woh hai… mere liye woh bohat acche hain (People say Salman is this and that… but for me, he is a gem of a person).” He also highlighted that Salman never made the gesture public or sought attention for it.
Rahul was accompanied in the interview by his soul sister, Hari Maa Priyanka, who first brought up the incident. Thanking Salman Khan openly, she said, “I want to thank Salman because whatever bill was pending, Salman cleared it in February.” She further shared that Salman personally called Rahul to check on him and asked if he could help in any way. “He had called him and asked if he can help with anything, and he literally helped and the bill is cleared now,” she added.
Priyanka also clarified that part of Rahul’s medical expenses had already been covered earlier by the director of LAC – Live the Battle in Kargil, adjusted against Rahul’s pending remuneration for the film. However, the remaining amount was taken care of by Salman Khan without hesitation.
What moved Priyanka the most was Salman’s silence about the gesture. “The most beautiful thing is Salman did not speak about it in front of the media,” she said. Describing the impact of his action, she added, “This touched my heart. This man is a gem. Somebody out of the whole crowd comes and asks in reality if you are actually in trouble and helps you. This is called being a star. Not just being a star in front of the camera.”
When asked about his personal equation with Salman Khan, Rahul Roy shared that they have known each other for years. “Yes, we worked together in Majhdhaar (1996). We have good memories together,” he said. Rahul also pointed out that he was the winner of Bigg Boss Season 1, a show hosted by Salman Khan, making their professional association span decades.
Beyond Aashiqui, Rahul Roy has featured in films like Junoon, Jaanam, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee, and Achanak, and more recently appeared in the Zee5 original Cabaret (2019). Yet, this quiet act of compassion remains one of the most powerful stories connected to his life.
As Rahul Roy celebrates another birthday, this throwback serves as a reminder that behind the glare of stardom, it is often unseen gestures of humanity that leave the deepest mark.
