Comedian Vir Das, known for his sharp wit and irreverent humor, took to Instagram to poke fun at the Cannes Film Festival’s new red carpet rules that ban nudity and voluminous outfits. The post, dripping with satire, came a day after the 78th edition of the festival began, with the globally recognized comic delivering a tongue-in-cheek reaction to the fashion restrictions.

“I was planning on taking multiple selfies of cultural significance,” Vir Das wrote, setting the tone for a hilariously exaggerated announcement. “It’s with deep regret that I announce I will no longer be attending the Cannes Film Festival because of the new red carpet rules,” he continued.

“For multiple generations, nude voluminous gowns with large trains have been culturally specific to the comedy community,” he quipped, mock-defending an imaginary tradition. Das then painted an absurd visual of the outfit he had “planned” to wear: “a dark beige, 78-foot long, off-shoulder piece that moved finely into sleeves that covered my wrists, but dipped lower and gently showcased the heart of my scrotum.”

The punchline? “But if I can’t wear a Gota original, I refuse to let our culture be shunted.”

The Cannes Film Festival’s new policy stems from past controversies, including a 2022 incident where a protestor appeared topless on the red carpet and more recently, Bianca Censori’s transparent dress at the Grammys. These incidents reportedly contributed to the implementation of the current restrictions.

According to an official statement, the festival emphasized that “this year, the Cannes Film Festival has made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law.”
