What was meant to be a routine visit to Mumbai turned into a quietly emotional evening for celebrity chef Vikas Khanna, who found himself transported back to his childhood through a lovingly prepared home-cooked meal.

The Michelin-starred chef, travelling with his mother, spent an evening with Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s family — an experience that stayed with him long after the plates were cleared.

Sharing his thoughts on social media, he described it as one of the best meals he has had in a very long time, not because of technique or presentation, but because it felt deeply personal.

Putting his feelings into words, Vikas Khanna wrote, “Mumbai gave me one of the best meals I’ve had in a long, long time. After years, I tasted Gajjar Halwa that felt exactly like my Biji’s—the kind that doesn’t just feed you… it returns you to your childhood. The Daal Bukhara was a healing hug from an elder in the family. The Kharode Curry was perfection—spot on, like the warmth of Kolkata’s Nalli Kosha. And that Makki Roti… softer than the ones I’ve eaten on Punjab highways in winter."

Thanking his hosts, Vikas Khanna added, “All of this was cooked by the brilliant @siddharthchopra89, just as he promised when he visited with the amazing Neelam. Thank you @drmadhuakhourichopra for hosting me."

The food, he said, stirred powerful memories. A serving of gajar halwa instantly reminded him of his grandmother, bringing back a sense of comfort that felt almost overwhelming.

The daal, slow-cooked and soulful, felt like the reassuring presence of an elder — gentle, grounding and healing. The kharode curry stood out as well, cooked so perfectly that it reminded him of traditional flavours from Kolkata, rich with warmth and nostalgia.

The person behind the meal made the evening even more meaningful. The entire spread was cooked by Siddharth Chopra, brother of Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who impressed Vikas Khanna with his commitment to authenticity and traditional flavours.

For a chef who has cooked in some of the world’s most celebrated kitchens, it was clear that sincerity mattered far more than sophistication.
