A controversy has erupted in the Tamil film industry after noted producer and critic G Dhananjheyan expressed strong criticism over actors allegedly setting a “wrong example” following the recent buzz around Vijay and actor Trisha Krishnan.
His remarks came shortly after reports claimed that the two actors had made their relationship virtually official.
Without directly naming Vijay or Trisha, Dhananjheyan shared his thoughts on social media platform X, where he appeared disturbed by what he described as influential public figures sending the wrong message to society. His comments quickly drew attention online, sparking debates among fans and industry observers.
In his post, Dhananjheyan referred to the famous dialogue from the 2002 film Spider-Man, emphasising the responsibility that comes with fame. He wrote, “With great power/popularity comes great responsibility,” referencing the popular line often associated with the superhero character.
He elaborated further on the expectations from celebrities, especially those who enjoy massive fan followings. According to him, popular personalities should be mindful of their influence on society.
“People with huge popularity carry great responsibility to set a good example for common people on how to lead a honest and respectful life for them to follow. When that's ignored, everyone loses their respect for them,” he wrote.
The producer also stressed the importance of family values and the emotional consequences when relationships are taken lightly. He stated, “For every person, Family comes first. When family is taken for granted and abused (mentally or emotionally), the love and respect for them gets lost. Such acts can't be normalised or justified under any circumstances.”
Dhananjheyan further admitted that the situation had personally disturbed him, especially because public figures influence millions of followers. He wrote, “Being a strong family oriented person, I am disturbed by a few leading actors setting wrong example thro' their acts, for their millions of fans and followers.”
Responding to a follower, he also commented on the legal and moral aspects of relationships. He said, “A family man must first come out of the marriage legally and then live the way you want to with whom ever.”
He concluded with a broader warning about the societal impact of such behaviour. “Don't normalise any other way of living. It will destroy our society if such a behaviour being followed by all. This is for all actors who are indulging in such acts, not just for one or two.”
Meanwhile, the controversy comes amid reports that Vijay’s divorce petition with his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam recently became public, where allegations regarding an affair with an actress were mentioned.
Adding fuel to speculation, Vijay and Trisha were recently seen attending the wedding reception of film producer Kalpathi S Suresh’s son in Chennai together, a moment that quickly went viral across social media platforms.
The debate continues to divide fans online, with some supporting Dhananjheyan’s concerns while others argue that celebrities’ personal lives should remain private.
