Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell film Jana Nayagan has officially missed its planned Republic Day week release, with the project continuing to remain entangled in a legal dispute involving the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Originally slated to hit theatres on January 9, the film’s release plans have now been pushed further as uncertainty looms over the court’s verdict.
On January 20, the Madras High Court heard arguments from both the CBFC and the makers of Jana Nayagan. After considering submissions from both sides, the court reserved its order without indicating a timeline for when a decision would be pronounced. The lack of clarity has proved costly for the film’s team, who were hopeful of receiving an early ruling that would allow them to capitalise on the Republic Day holiday window, traditionally one of the most lucrative periods for theatrical releases.
During the hearing, production house KVN Productions underlined the scale of the financial risk involved, stating that the film carries an investment of approximately Rs 500 crore. The producers also revealed that streaming giant Amazon Prime Video had issued a legal notice on December 31, warning of potential legal action due to the prolonged uncertainty around the film’s release date and contractual obligations.
With the Republic Day window now out of reach, industry sources indicate that the makers, along with theatre owners and exhibitors, are considering early February as the next viable option. February 6 or February 13 are being discussed as potential release dates. The timing could work in the film’s favour, as there are currently no major Tamil releases lined up for February, and the festive Sankranti releases from the Telugu film industry are expected to taper off by then. This could give Jana Nayagan a relatively clear run at the box office, both in India and overseas.
However, the clock is ticking. Reports suggest that the Election Commission of India may announce the Tamil Nadu Assembly election schedule in the third week of February. Once the Model Code of Conduct comes into force, films linked to political figures can face closer scrutiny.
Given Vijay’s political entry through his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), authorities could intervene if they believe the film has the potential to influence voters. This makes an early February release crucial to avoid further delays.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, and a large ensemble cast.
