Mollywood actor Unni Mukundan reacts to assault allegations

Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan has opened up on the allegations charged against him of assaulting his former manager, Vipin Kumar, by stating that the allegations are false and are an effort to defame him.

Speaking to Manorama Online in an exclusive interview, Unni claimed he never indulged in any sort of 'physical violence' and termed the development as a 'very painful betrayal' by a friend. “I didn’t assault him. I just wanted to ask him why he’s running a smear campaign against me when I thought he was a friend, said the Marco star.

“There’s camera evidence and a witness”

The complainant claimed that the accusation of the incident that happened at the basement parking area of Vipin’s Kochi flat is recorded in the CCTV. The mutual friend Vishnu Unnithan was with them at that time, too," Unni says.

“Vipin came out with black sunglasses. And when I challenged him about the rumours he was circulating, he gave me no clear answer. He was very ashamed and could not look into my eyes,” said Unni. “I did snatch his sunglasses, shattered them into tiny fragments, but I physically did not harm him.”

‘I was looking for closure, not conflict’

Unni told me that he had gone to Vipin for consolation, not a confrontation. “Meppadiyan director Vishnu Mohan confronted Vipin earlier, and Vipin confessed to planting the baseless information and said sorry too,” Unni said. “Vishnu suggested that I come and meet him in person, and we can sort things out. That’s why I went," he added.

Unni also added that he’d also asked for Vipin to cease working and return all account access and passwords to him with a written apology as well. “Instead, he is now making such irresponsible allegations to hide his failures,” Unni said.

On accusations related to ‘Narivetta’

Unni also denied gossip that his act had anything to do with Tovino Thomas or the movie Narivetta, which was released on Friday. He cleared the air, stating that he had no bad blood on the issue and, in fact, had a friendly chat with Tovino on the same.

“I never spoke against Narivetta. That’s just propaganda. Tovino and I have been friends since the early days of our careers and something like this can never harm a friendship,” he said adding, “Tovino was among the first to come and celebrate the success of Marco with me.”

Awaiting police findings

The FIR has been registered under the Infopark Station of the Kochi Police and is being probed. Unni said the truth will eventually come out, given that the incident happened in a public area with infrastructure cameras and a third-party witness.

There has been no response from Vipin Kumar so far, except for the police complaint. There is also no official statement from Unni Mukundan’s side so far, but the statements given to Manorama Online are the first time the actor has defended himself publicly.
