Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan has found himself in a controversy after a case of physical and verbal assault was slapped against him by his long-standing manager Vipin Kumar.
An abridged version of this was cemented in what happened a few days ago at Gulf-based chain Galitos in Kochi, as per multiple reports, including based on Manorama News and Asianet’s articles, where the manager wrote on Facebook, "'Narivetta' the actor's latest film, is awe-inspiring!"
Vipin Kumar has complained to the Infopark Police Station, Kochi, and has also appealed to the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA). In a police statement, he alleges that Unni Mukundan physically attacked and verbally abused him after the post on social media. According to reports, the scuffle had left Kumar injured and he had undergone medical treatment as well.
The police have initiated an inquiry and stated that they will only act after an investigation. Unni Mukundan and his supporters have not made any public remarks so far.
Vipin Kumar who had a lien on the actor for some time, supervised the professional work of the actor. According to sources around the Malayalam film fraternity, the face-off came as a surprise to many.
Not the Actor’s First Tryst with Controversy
This isn't Unni Mukundan's first brush with the law. In 2018, a woman had filed a case against him of sexual harassment which was later dismissed by the court.
The Praise That Launched It All
The bone of contention seems to be a social media post by Kumar, wherein, he was thrilled about Tovino Thomas’ powerful portrayal in Narivetta (a Malayalam action drama that was released in theatres on May 23, 2025). The film, which is directed by Anuraj Manohar (Ishq) and written by Abin Joseph, is inspired by the 2003 Muthanga incident, an actual protest by the Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha against the late land allocations.
Two people, including a police officer, were killed when police opened fire during the protest. The film is drawing praise for its story and performances, including that of Tovino as a tribal rights activist.

Narivetta has a solid cast that also boasts actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu, Cheran (his first in M-Town), Arya Salim and Priyamvada Krishnan.
With the probe on and Narivetta running successfully at the theatres with good response from the audience, it will be intriguing to see how Unni Mukundan and the team respond to the grave allegations. The episode has also prompted a broader conversation within the industry about professionalism and power dynamics behind the stage.
