The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed Priya Kapur and Mandhira Kapur Smith to conduct themselves with dignity and refrain from making any defamatory remarks against each other in public, as it heard a Rs 20 crore defamation suit filed by Priya Kapur. The matter came up before Justice Mini Pushkarna on February 17.
During the hearing, the Court observed that members of the Kapur family must act responsibly and avoid public mudslinging that could further damage reputations. Justice Pushkarna restrained both sides from making any further statements that may be defamatory in nature until the case is decided.
The dispute stems from statements allegedly made by Mandhira Kapur Smith during an episode of the In controversial podcast, hosted by Pooja Chaudhri.
According to Priya Kapur’s suit, Mandhira portrayed her as an outsider with no legitimate right to represent or control the business affairs of the Kapur family.
The suit further claims that Mandhira suggested the family’s wealth and inheritance belonged solely to the “bloodline” and her children. Priya has alleged that she was accused of attempting to take over the family legacy and sideline other members following the death of her husband, late industrialist Sunjay Kapur.
Describing the remarks as “injurious to her reputation,” Priya has sought damages of Rs 20 crore. Her plea states that the statements were made on a public platform and were subsequently amplified across digital platforms including YouTube, Instagram, and X, leading to widespread circulation.
The Court also issued notice in the interim relief application moved by Priya against Mandhira Kapur Smith and podcast host Pooja Chaudhri. The matter has now been listed for further hearing on May 14.

In her petition, Priya has alleged that the conduct complained of is not an isolated incident but part of a long-standing pattern of hostility and harassment. The suit refers to earlier disputes, including alleged financial demands made upon her late husband.
Priya has argued that after her husband’s demise, the hostility shifted towards her. She has described the podcast statements as reckless and malicious, asserting that they are unsupported by facts and cannot be defended as fair comment or opinion.
According to the plea, the continued availability and circulation of the content online has caused ongoing reputational harm, social humiliation, and emotional distress to her and her children. The Delhi High Court will consider the interim relief plea at the next hearing in May.
