On December 2, 2024, the birth anniversary of the late South Indian actress Silk Smitha, a biopic about her life was announced. The film, titled Silk Smitha: The Untold Story, will explore her journey, struggles, and achievements in the film industry. Actress Chandrika Ravi will play the role of Silk Smitha, and the project has already generated excitement among fans and the film community.

Silk Smitha, whose real name was Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati, was one of the most iconic and bold actresses in Indian cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.

She became famous after her breakthrough role in the Tamil film Vandichakkaram (1980), where she played a cabaret dancer named Silk.

The character’s name stuck with her, and she came to be known as Silk Smitha. Over her career, she appeared in over 400 films in languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.

Despite her glamorous image on screen, her personal life was filled with challenges, and she passed away tragically in 1996 at the age of 35.

The biopic aims to show the real Silk Smitha, not just her glamorous side but also her struggles and the strength she showed in a male-dominated industry.

Chandrika Ravi, the actress playing Smitha, expressed her gratitude for being chosen to portray such an important figure.

She shared a 3 minute long teaser of the upcoming movie on Silk Smitha’s birthday, saying, “With the blessings of her family, I am honored to bring her untold story to life.” Along with her message, a first-look image was shared, where Chandrika was seen in a traditional saree, recreating Silk Smitha’s iconic style.

The film is directed by Jayaram Sankaran, known for his work in the Tamil series Sweet Kaaram Coffee. It is produced by SB Vijay under STRI Cinemas. The movie is set to begin production in 2025 and will be released in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada, so it can reach a wide audience.

Chandrika Ravi’s journey to this role is inspiring. Born and raised in Australia, she moved to Los Angeles to study acting and later entered South Indian cinema with the Tamil film Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu in 2018. She gained more attention with her role in the 2023 Telugu movie Veera Simha Reddy.

Chandrika feels a deep connection to Silk Smitha’s story, saying they both faced similar challenges as outsiders trying to find acceptance in the industry.

Silk Smitha’s life was previously explored in the 2011 Bollywood movie The Dirty Picture, starring Vidya Balan. While that film received critical acclaim, Silk Smitha: The Untold Story promises a more authentic and emotional portrayal, with input from Smitha’s family.

Fans and critics alike are looking forward to this biopic, as it aims to celebrate the courage and spirit of an actress who left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. The movie will offer a closer look at her life, giving audiences a chance to understand the real woman behind the glamorous image.
