Actor Shanaya Kapoor recently spoke candidly about a painful chapter from her past, revealing how she once discovered her then-boyfriend was messaging five other women while they were on vacation abroad. Appearing on the podcast Relationshit Advice, Shanaya described the moment her “perfect” romance unravelled in a way she never expected.
Looking back, she admitted that she had truly believed she was living a dream. “I was thinking, ‘This is it. It’s too good to be true. What a life, wow. This is the best relationship,’” she recalled. At the time, everything seemed ideal. They were travelling together, spending quality time, and building memories. Nothing appeared out of place — until one small incident changed everything.
The turning point came on what was supposed to be a regular evening. As they were getting ready to head out for dinner, Shanaya’s phone battery died. She asked to borrow her boyfriend’s phone to book a cab. While unlocking it, she noticed a message notification pop up from his ex-girlfriend. Curious and unsettled, she opened the chat.
What she found left her stunned.
“The second girl popped up, the third girl, the fourth, the fifth. There were five girls he was messaging,” Shanaya said, explaining that he was speaking to each of them as if he were single. The discovery unfolded rapidly, each new notification deepening the shock. According to her, the tone of the conversations felt inappropriate and crossed emotional boundaries.
Overwhelmed, she took screenshots of the chats and sent them to her close friends on Snapchat, seeking advice. Among those she contacted was actor Ananya Panday. Shanaya shared that Ananya immediately urged her to leave the situation. “My friend, Ananya, was like, ‘Catch a train and just come here. We were pretty close by.’ I was like, ‘I can’t just catch a f***** train, what do I do?’” she recounted.
Being in a foreign country added another layer of anxiety. She felt vulnerable and unsure of how to handle the confrontation. Instead of immediately calling him out, Shanaya said she chose to maintain a facade. “This whole dinner, I’m pretending like everything’s okay,” she admitted. For the next three days, she continued going out, sitting through meals, and acting normal while quietly processing the betrayal.
Eventually, her boyfriend sensed something was wrong. In an apparent attempt to smooth things over, he gifted her an expensive pair of earrings. Shanaya, however, saw through the gesture. She later confronted him and sarcastically referred to the jewellery as “guilty earrings.”
When questioned about the messages, her former partner reportedly dismissed the seriousness of the situation, insisting it was “just messaging” and that nothing physical had happened. For Shanaya, though, the damage was already done. She viewed the behaviour as emotional cheating and felt the breach of trust was impossible to ignore.
Despite ending the relationship, she revealed that she still owns the earrings. With a touch of humour, she said she had “earned” them after enduring the ordeal. Her candid admission struck a chord with listeners, many of whom relate to the grey area of digital betrayal in modern relationships.
On the professional front, Shanaya is currently promoting her latest film, Tu Yaa Main, which released alongside O Romeo on February 13. Even as she steps into a new phase of her career, her honest account of heartbreak highlights a more personal side of the actor — one that acknowledges vulnerability, self-respect, and ultimately, moving on.
