Renu Desai, an actor and activist, went to a press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club on Monday with actor Rashmi Gautam and director Sashi Kiran Tikka to talk about street dog bites and public safety. What started as a talk about animal rights and human safety quickly turned into a tense situation that got a lot of attention online.
Renu Desai looked very upset during the interaction after having a fight with someone in the audience. Videos of the event quickly spread on social media, showing her yelling while talking about the disruption. This led to a range of reactions and speculation. Renu Desai asks why some people are angry and not others.
During the argument, Renu strongly questioned what she called "selective outrage" over incidents involving street dogs. She brought up other public safety issues, like diseases spread by mosquitoes, car accidents, and violent crimes, saying that all human lives should be valued equally.
She asked why people were only angry at street dogs when people were dying from dengue and there weren't many protests about road safety violations. She said that just like crimes committed by a few people don't justify targeting an entire group, animals shouldn't be blamed for isolated incidents either.
People had a lot to say about her comments, especially the ones about serious crimes. There was a lot of disagreement about her choice of comparison and the tone of the conversation.
Video of the clarification released
After reports said she had fought with a journalist, Renu Desai went on Instagram to set the record straight about what happened. She said in the video that the fight was not with a media professional but with someone else who allegedly caused trouble at the event and tried to get close to the stage in a threatening way.
Renu said that security and volunteers stepped in to stop things from getting worse, which made her emotional. She made it clear that her anger was directed at the person who was causing the trouble and not at the press.
She also put to rest rumors that she was going into politics, saying that her activism is only motivated by a desire to keep people safe .
Calls out personal attacks and trolling on the internet
Renu also talked about online trolls who brought her personal life into the controversy, like comments about her kids and her marriage to actor Pawan Kalyan. She said that her advocacy does not come with any personal gain and that the comments were insensitive and hurtful.
She said again that her position was based on concern for both human lives and the moral treatment of animals. She also said that wishing harm on children was going too far. To stop more abuse, Renu later turned off comments on her post that explained things.
Renu Desai and Pawan Kalyan were married from 2009 to 2012. They have two kids together, Akira Nandan and Aadhya. Since the event, there has been a renewed interest in how to handle street dogs, what people are saying in public, and the line between activism and personal attacks.
