A new development has emerged in the ongoing legal tussle surrounding Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan. As per recent reports, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has now referred the film to its Revising Committee, adding another layer to the already prolonged certification process.
According to a source cited by India Today, Jana Nayagan, which is currently locked in a legal battle at the Madras High Court over its pending censor certificate, was sent to the Revising Committee on Monday.
The publication further stated that once the certificate is issued, this move is expected to prompt the production house to withdraw its petition from the court. However, the makers of the film are yet to officially confirm this development.
The controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan dates back to December 2025, when the film was initially submitted for certification. At the time, the examining committee reportedly suggested multiple cuts and recommended a U/A certificate.
The producers, KVN Productions, accepted the proposed changes without delay. Despite this, a fresh objection was later raised within the CBFC regarding certain scenes, following which the Chairperson referred the film to a higher Revising Committee—effectively bringing the certification process to a standstill.
Earlier, after hearing the matter, the Madras High Court had reserved its order on January 20.
The delay in certification snowballed into a major issue, especially since Jana Nayagan is being promoted as Vijay’s final film appearance before he fully transitions into active politics.
During the court proceedings, Senior Advocate Satish Parasaran, Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai and Advocate Vijayan Subramaniam, appearing on behalf of KVN Productions, argued that the CBFC had earlier conveyed that the film would be granted a U/A certificate, but the same was never issued. They also submitted that the makers had complied with all the modifications recommended by the board, yet the certificate was withheld and the film was instead referred to the Revising Committee.
With the film scheduled for a January 9 release, the unexpected delay placed the producers in a tight spot, exposing them to potential financial losses. This led KVN Productions to approach the Madras High Court, contending that the prolonged delay by the CBFC was unjustified.

While a single judge initially directed the CBFC to issue the censor certificate, the order was later overturned by a larger bench, which held that the board must be allowed to complete its statutory procedure. The producers briefly attempted to move the Supreme Court but were subsequently directed back to the Madras High Court to await the CBFC’s final decision.
Jana Nayagan was originally slated to hit theatres on January 9. Several reports now suggest that the film’s release could further be impacted due to the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which are expected to be held in April–May this year.
