After multiple delays, Karthi and Kriti Shetty’s Vaa Vaathiyaar hit the theaters on January 14, 2026.
Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, the vigilante action-comedy, which also has Rajkiran, Sathyaraj, and other well-known actors, is currently streaming on OTT.
After its theatrical run, you can now see the movie on Amazon Prime Video.
Plot:
It is the story about a man named Ramu, who is also known as DSP Rameshwaran. His grandfather raised him. He was a big fan of the famous actor and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). Ramu's grandfather teaches him strong values like honesty, justice, and doing the right thing because he thinks Ramu would carry on MGR's principles.
At first, Rameshwaran tries to follow these rules when he joins the system, but over time he becomes part of a corrupt machine and works with powerful and secretive people. Over time, an alter personality named 'Vaathiyar' appears. This is a vigilante character based on MGR's ideas that makes Ramu fight injustice in his own way. The movie asks if Rameshwaran ever finds the values his grandfather stood for again and how his vigilante side deals with the criminals surrounding him.
What works
People know Nalan Kumarasamy from movies like Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum and Soodhu Kavvum. He tells stories in his typical strange way. Vaa Vaathiyaar gives the vigilante genre a new twist by mixing Tamil pop culture with Hollywood stories. This experimental style gives the movie a different feel and has some pretty funny parts.
He plays Rameshwaran, a character who may easily go too far, with charm and self-control. He keeps the character from going too insane.
Santhosh Narayanan's music is really good on the technical side. The movie's music and sound effects make it even stranger and make the funny and serious moments even better. There are some really interesting frames and creative portions in the movie that stand out.
What doesn't
The idea behind Vaa Vaathiyaar is good, however the writing isn't always outstanding. The screenplay starts off OK, but it often feels shallow since it spends too much time on loud, silly MGR-inspired antics that aren't really profound. This weakens the vigilante theme.
The movie gets boring and long after the break, and it loses its energy. The alter-ego point of view doesn't get very deep into the character's mind and just shows a little bit of how the character transforms.
Krithi Shetty's role is another wasted chance. She puts a lot of energy and honesty into her performance, but her character isn't particularly deep and is sometimes less interesting than the main character, which makes her less effective overall.
Karthi and Krithi Shetty are honest actors who have a great time together. The writing doesn't fully use their skills, but veteran actors like Rajkiran, Sathyaraj, and Nizhalgal Ravi add depth and weight.
Verdict:
Vaa Vaathiyaar has both good and bad points. The Karthi starrer definitely has some rom com moments and good action scenes too but it has trouble keeping up its speed and depth.
