The excitement around Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has hit a sudden pause, as the Madras High Court has stayed the film’s certification following an appeal by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Originally set to release on Friday, January 9, 2026, the film—Vijay’s last before stepping into politics—is now in a holding pattern, with the next hearing scheduled for January 21.
Earlier in the day, the court had cleared the way for the film, directing the CBFC to issue a U/A certificate immediately.
Fans were thrilled at the prospect of seeing the superstar back on the big screen. But the CBFC quickly filed a writ appeal, arguing that the intense action sequences in the film warranted an A certificate instead.
The legal back-and-forth has now put the release on hold, leaving audiences anxiously waiting for clarity.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice’s bench questioned why the CBFC had acted so urgently, especially on the same day as the earlier order.
The Additional Solicitor General explained the timeline: the petition was filed on January 5, heard on the 6th, and accompanied by a required letter on January 7, following the court’s instructions. Even with this clarification, the bench issued a stay on the certification, pushing the matter to January 21 for further discussion.
KVN Productions, the studio behind Jana Nayagan, had approached the court after facing delays from the CBFC in issuing the certificate. Justice P.T. Asha, who had initially ruled in favour of the film, had noted, “After examining the materials, it is crystal clear that the complainant's grievance appears to be an afterthought.”

The court had also confirmed that once the examining committee’s suggestions were incorporated, the U/A 16+ certificate would be granted automatically.
For fans, the postponement is a disappointment, as anticipation for Vijay’s final performance before his political journey had been mounting.
The Tamil action thriller has generated buzz not just for its gripping storyline and star cast, but also for the legal drama surrounding its release.
With the next hearing set for January 21, audiences will have to wait a little longer to see the high-octane action and the charismatic presence of Thalapathy Vijay on screen.
