Legendary Composer S. P. Venkatesh passes away at 70, leaving behind a golden-era musical legacy

Renowned South Indian music composer S. P. Venkatesh has passed away at the age of 70 in Chennai, leaving behind a rich legacy in Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada cinema. Starting his journey as a guitarist in 1971, he went on to become a celebrated independent composer known for his memorable film scores.

S. P. Venkatesh, a well-known music composer and a big name in South Indian cinema, died at the age of 70 in Chennai. Onmanorama says that his funeral will be held tomorrow in Alapakkam, Chennai.

Venkatesh started his career as a guitarist in the film industry in 1971, working closely with famous composer Vijayabhaskar. He grew steadily in his early years, and by 1975 he was well-known as an assistant music director in Kannada cinema. In 1981, he released his first film as an independent composer, the Telugu movie Prema Yuddham. This was the beginning of a very successful career.

Venkatesh started out as an assistant in Malayalam cinema, working with big names like Raghavan Master. He also helped A. T. Ummar write background music for movies like Sathyan Anthikad's T. P. Balagopalan M.A.. Dennis Joseph and Thampi Kannanthanam, two filmmakers who played a big part in his rise, helped him make the switch to a full-fledged music director.

Thampi Kannanthanam's Rajavinte Makan was a big step forward. Its songs and strong background music resonated with audiences and changed the course of his career for good. S. P. Venkatesh became one of the most important composers in Malayalam cinema in the 1990s. He was known for combining complex melodies with literary sensitivity while still being very popular.

Some of his most famous movies are Rajavinte Makan, Vilambaram, Vazhiyorakazhchakal, Douthyam, Bhoomiyile Rajakumaaran, Vyooham, Kuttettan, Appu (background score), Mahayanam (background score), Naadodi, Kaazhchakkappuram, Ennodishtam Koodamo, Kilukkam, Johnnie Walker, Devasuram (background score), Dhruvam, Valsalyam, Paithrukam, Sainyam, Sopanam, Minnaram, Mannar Mathai Speaking, Manthrikam, and Sphadikam, to name a few.

S. P. Venkatesh was known for his mastery of instruments like the mandolin and for his emotionally powerful background scores. He leaves behind a rich musical legacy. He will always be remembered as one of the most important voices in Malayalam cinema's golden age.
