Jana Nayagan, which is said to be Tamil superstar Vijay's last movie before he becomes a full-time politician in Tamil Nadu, is still facing big problems before its release.
With a massive budget of almost Rs 500 crore, the ambitious project has hit a major snag because of unresolved certification issues, which has put a lot of financial pressure on the makers.
Jana Nayagan was supposed to come out in theaters on Sankranthi (January 9), but the Central Board of Film Certification raised concerns, so its release has been put on hold indefinitely.
The censor board has marked some dialogues and visual sequences as problematic because they could offend religious people. Even though the makers went to the Madras High Court for help, they didn't get a good order, which made things even more complicated.
Sources say that the production team still doesn't want to make the changes or cuts that the censor board has suggested.
People say that Vijay won't compromise because he is so sure about what the movie is about. Reports say that the actor has made it clear to the producers that they should not cut or change important scenes, many of which were reportedly written with his political debut in mind.
It doesn't look like there will be an immediate solution since both sides are standing firm.
People in the industry are saying that the certification problem could last a long time, which could mean that the producers have to think about pushing the movie back to a much later date.
There are also rumors that Jana Nayagan may not come out until after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections because of its political themes.
But sources close to KVN Productions say that if the company agrees to make the changes that have been suggested, the movie could still be in theaters as early as February. Right now, the producers have the final say because Jana Nayagan is stuck between her creative beliefs, legal problems, and business realities.
Madras HC sets aside single bench order
In a setback to top actor Vijay-starrer Tamil film "Jana Nayagan", the Madras High Court on Tuesday set aside the order of a single judge that directed the CBFC to grant censor certificate to the movie, and said that certain references to the Army and religious sentiments require consideration.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice M M Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan stated that the single judge, Justice P T Asha, should have given time to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for filing counter affidavit.
The ruling virtually makes the fate of the film, originally slated for a Pongal release earlier this month, uncertain. The film is stated to be Vijay's last, ahead of his full-fledged political entry. He heads the fledgling Tamiga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) political party. (With PTI Inputs)
