Naveen Polishetty has steadily made a name for himself in Telugu cinema with a series of performances that people enjoy. This Sankranthi, the actor is back with a fun movie called Anaganaga Oka Raju, which Maari directed.
Meenakshi Chaudhary plays the female lead in this holiday movie, which came out in theatres today with some buzz. Let's take a closer look at how the movie turns out.
Plot:
Raju (Naveen Polishetty) comes from a family that used to be rich but is now poor because his grandfather gave too much money to his mistresses. Raju wants to get back the glory he lost, so he plans to marry into money. He meets Charulatha (Meenakshi Chaudhary) and gets closer to her by using his wit and street smarts. But just when everything seems to be going well, an unexpected discovery changes everything.
What Works:
If a movie doesn't have a good plot, it depends a lot on the lead actor's ability to keep the audience interested. Anaganaga Oka Raju is a great example of this, and Naveen Polishetty does a great job. The movie is mostly carried by his comic timing, expressive reactions, and energetic presence on screen.
Naveen keeps showing why people think he is one of Tollywood's most promising comic actors, and people compare him to veterans like Rajendra Prasad and Allari Naresh. It's clear that he was involved in the writing because a lot of the punchlines and situational jokes work well. Naveen's enthusiasm keeps the story going, even when some of the jokes don't work.
The parts where Raju tries to impress Charulatha and win over villagers during local elections are especially funny. Meenakshi Chaudhary is a great match for him, especially in the first half. Her Telugu diction and lip sync are both very good, which makes her performance seem real and believable. Supporting actors like Chammak Chandra and Rao Ramesh help out and make it more fun.
What Doesn't Work:
The movie gets serious in the second half, but the emotional beats don't have the effect they should. The sudden change in tone seems forced and ruins the otherwise light mood of the movie.
The second half loses steam at times and could have used better editing. A special song with Saanve Megghana is a big distraction and doesn't add much to the story. The antagonist's track doesn't have enough depth to be memorable.
Technicalities:
Mickey J Meyer's music is okay, and a few of his songs work well on screen. The rustic village background is well captured by J. Yuvraj's cinematography. The editing is sharp in the first half, but it could have been sharper in the second half to keep up the pace.
Director Maari does an okay job, but he focuses more on the jokes than the story. Naveen Polishetty's writing makes sure that a lot of the funny parts work, even if the sad parts don't.

Verdict:
Overall, Anaganaga Oka Raju is a light, fun movie that is mostly based on Naveen Polishetty's performance. The movie is worth watching, especially the first half, because of his humour and screen presence. Meenakshi Chaudhary does a good job in her role, but the movie is held back by a weak plot and an emotional stretch that doesn't go far enough in the second half. Anaganaga Oka Raju is a good choice if you want to watch something fun and not too serious.
