Veteran actor Ramesh Deo, a familiar face in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, is being remembered on his birth anniversary today, January 30. Best known to many viewers for his gentle, believable presence in classics like Anand, Deo belonged to that rare category of performers who could lift a scene without needing the spotlight.
Born on January 30, 1929, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Ramesh Deo built an unusually long and wide-ranging career. He worked across films, theatre and television, and was also involved in production and direction. Over the decades, he appeared in hundreds of projects, with biographies noting more than 285 Hindi films and around 190 Marathi films, apart from Marathi stage work.
In Anand (1971), directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Deo played Dr. Prakash Kulkarni, part of the emotional world surrounding Rajesh Khanna’s Anand and Amitabh Bachchan’s Dr Bhaskar. The film’s supporting cast, including Ramesh Deo and Seema Deo, added warmth and lived-in realism to a story that continues to find new audiences.
What made Deo especially respected in the industry was his ability to fit naturally into every kind of narrative, from family dramas to social films, without feeling “cast” as a type. Over his career he worked with virtually every major star of his era. Reports recalling his passing specifically note his collaborations with Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar and Dharmendra, underlining the scale of his film journey.
From the mid-1950s onwards, he kept working continuously, staying active right up to 2022. That endurance is why his filmography feels like a history of screens.
Away from the camera, Ramesh Deo’s life was closely intertwined with cinema. He was married to actor Seema Deo, and together they became one of the best-known actor couples across Hindi and Marathi entertainment. The couple had two sons, actor Ajinkya Deo and director Abhinay Deo.
Deo’s contribution was recognised with multiple honours over the years, including lifetime achievement recognitions in Marathi cinema circles and festivals.
Ramesh Deo passed away in Mumbai on February 2, 2022, at the age of 93. On his birth anniversary, the most fitting tribute is simple: revisit a film like Anand and notice how quietly essential he is to its texture.
