Prime Video has officially renewed We Were Liars, the hit mystery thriller from Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, adapted from E. Lockhart’s bestselling 2014 novel of the same name.
The first season introduced viewers to Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her close group of friends, known as “The Liars,” during their idyllic summers on her wealthy grandfather’s private island in New England.
Author E. Lockhart, whose book the series is based on, spoke about what fans can expect from season 2. She promised “big, big plans for season two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen — and a lot of surprises as well.”
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Lockhart reflected on how her novel found new life a decade after publication thanks to TikTok. She also spoke about the importance of keeping the show’s major plot twist under wraps for first-time viewers, noting that the ending subtly ties back to her prequel novel, Family of Liars.
When discussing the final script for the new season, Lockhart hinted at the secrecy surrounding Cadence’s amnesia storyline. “They don’t want the mystery spoiled. They don’t want the solution to Cadence’s amnesia revealed until they experience it through the show. So, just like when the book first came out, we have a similar campaign for the series, where people who already know the ending are invited to keep it secret — to lie, in a sense. I think it’s fun to be part of that little club of people who know the truth,” she explained.
The season one cast also featured Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil, Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis, Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny Sinclair, Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair, Candice King as Bess Sinclair, Rahul Kohli as Ed Patil, and David Morse as Harris Sinclair.
