Actor Konkona Sen Sharma is gearing up to portray a doctor in London who is seeing a woman (played by Pratibha Ranta) in the upcoming Netflix film, Accused.
In the film, Konkona's character is accused of being a sexual predator at work. Konkona has revealed how, in contrast to previous films, the movie does not view her character's sexual orientation as a "problem."
In an interview with Just Too Filmy, Konkona said, “We often will not have characters in films who are homosexual unless we are dealing with it as an issue. Or unless, like a few decades back, we are deriving some kind of derogatory humour from it."
She elaborated, "Even, for example, differently abled people, they are not usually portrayed unless that is the issue that is being discussed. Because our world is not peopled, our world is peopled by the default. And the default is often straight, male, Hindi-speaking. Not varied enough."
“Yes, it is a homosexual couple. But it is not there on the face. It does not come across very preachy. The situations are very real; the lack of trust, the manner in which one will go to any extent to be there for the partner. Until you realise there's more to that…”
Even while reading the script, Pratibha continued, the characters seemed like any typical couple.
The teaser for the movie depicted how tensions in Geetika and Meera's relationship escalate following the charges. Geetika, who spent years constructing her profession piece by piece, watches helplessly as it crumbles before her eyes. The film analyses the strain this puts on her closest relationships as public scrutiny grows and looks at how perception can trump certainty.
Sima Agarwal and Yash Keswani have penned the script for the film. Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, the psychological thriller is backed by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawala and Somen Mishra.
Accused is scheduled to be released on Netflix on February 27.
