Global pop icon Taylor Swift’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl has been shattering records since its release on October 3.
According to early data reported by monitoring firm Luminate, the album has achieved an extraordinary 3.5 million equivalent album units in the United States. The tracking week for these figures began on Friday, October 3, and will conclude on Thursday, October 9.
Out of the total, 3.2 million came from traditional album sales — including both physical and digital formats — while around 300,000 units were generated through streams of the album’s tracks.
With these numbers, The Life of a Showgirl is on the verge of breaking the record for the biggest single-week sales in the modern era, dating back to 1991, when Luminate first began tracking sales electronically.
The current record is held by Adele’s 25, which sold 3.378 million copies during its debut week in 2015.
By reaching 3.5 million equivalent album units, Swift’s new release has now set a fresh record for the highest single-week total since the Billboard 200 began using this metric in December 2014.
The previous benchmark was also held by Adele’s 25, which earned 3.482 million units in its opening week on the December 12, 2015 chart, primarily from direct album purchases.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that none of the songs from The Life of a Showgirl have been released individually. This means every unit from its debut week comes entirely from complete album sales and streams, without any boost from single-track sales.
For reference, one equivalent album unit represents one full album sale, or 10 digital track sales, or 3,750 ad-supported streams, or 1,250 paid/subscription streams — whether audio or video — from the record.
