
Actor and singer Prashant Tamang passed away on January 11, 2026, in New Delhi. He was 43.
Prashant was found dead at his residence. Initial reports point to a sudden heart attack, although formal medical confirmation is still pending.
He rose to stardom after winning Indian Idol Season 3 in 2007.
Filmmaker Rajesh Ghatani confirmed Prashant Tamang’s death. Meanwhile, West Bengal’s Darjeeling-based singer Mahesh Sewa said he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.
Tributes started pouring in soon after reports of Prashant Tamang's death were confirmed. One person tweeted, "Indian Idol winner and actor Prashant Tamang, the first and only Gorkha Indian to win the show, has passed away. Rest in peace, beautiful soul."
Another wrote, "his news came as shocking for all us. And just like rest of Nepalese people, I also grew up listening to one of his hit song, "Ashare Mahinama". This song will forever be etched in our memory. Rest in peace, Prashant Tamang.
A third person penned, "Deeply saddened by the sudden demise of renowned singer and actor Prashant Tamang. The Indian Idol Season 3 winner leaves behind a legacy of music, humility, and inspiration. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and fans. May his soul rest in peace."

Millions were inspired by Tamang's path from being a constable for the Kolkata Police to being well-known throughout South Asia.
