The voice that could have turned the ‘Titanic’ over from its wreckage (she’s got that oomph) Celine Dion, the music legend behind the timeless hits like “My Heart Will Go On” and “The Power of Love” might make comeback to the stage very soon.
This news comes from the recent revelation of the legendary artists’ diagnosis with Stiff Person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder which results in muscle rigidity and spasms, she remains unyielding in spirit.
Celine Dion first revealed her condition in December 2022, leading to the postponement of several shows. In a recent interview with Hoda Kotb on NBC's Today Show, Dion exhibited a resilient determination. Confronting the disease's challenges, she asserted, "I'm going to go back onstage, even if I have to crawl, even if I have to talk with my hands. I will. I will."
During the NBC interview, set to air in full later on Tuesday, Dion shared her struggle with stiff person syndrome—a condition causing muscle stiffness in the torso, arms, and legs, and triggering intense spasms. Nevertheless, she vowed to do everything possible to perform again.
The Grammy winning star expressed, "I am Celine Dion. Today, my voice will be heard, not out of necessity, but because I want to. I miss performing."
For those unfamiliar, this neurological disorder can severely impact a person's ability to move or speak due to stiffness.
The syndrome has significantly impacted Dion's life, affecting her mobility and vocal performance, which led to the cancellation of residencies and tours. Despite this, her passion for performing remains unwavering. "I won't frighten my fans or tell my kids I had to stop the show. I'll take the stage ready to perform, unafraid of my vocal cords, ready to hit those notes," Dion declared.
Describing the pain, she said, "It’s like somebody is strangling you,” revealing that the spasms have sometimes caused broken ribs.
Dion had to cancel numerous shows planned for 2023 and 2024, stating she was not strong enough to tour.
Dion's unwavering commitment to her art and her audience is deeply motivating. Reflecting on her relationship with music, the "To Love You More" artist shared, "I don’t want to be scared of myself and questioning my music, my songs. I don’t. Because music is a language. And it’s in everybody’s life."
Earlier this year, she made a surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards, presenting the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift.
Throughout her illustrious career, Dion has sold over 250 million albums.
