Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has responded to a wave of criticism following remarks he made in a recent interview about perceived bias in the Hindi film industry, clarifying that he never intended to cause pain and reaffirming his deep connection to India and its music. The composer addressed the controversy in a heartfelt video message shared on his social media platforms on January 18, 2026.
In his video statement, Rahman described India as his inspiration and home, emphasising the unifying role music has played in his life. He stated, “Music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt.”
To underscore his lifelong devotion to Indian music and cultural diversity, Rahman cited several of his artistic projects: from nurturing the Jhalaa performance at the Waves summit and collaborating with young Naga musicians, to mentoring the Sunshine orchestra and building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band. He also referenced his recent work on the score for Ramayana alongside Hans Zimmer, describing such projects as deeply meaningful to him.
“I feel blessed to be Indian, which enables me to create a space which always allows freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices. From nurturing Jhalaa, presented at the WAVES summit in front of the honourable Prime Minister and Rooh-e-Noor, to collaborating with the young Naga musicians, to creating a string orchestra, to mentoring the Sunshine orchestra, also building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band and the honour of scoring Ramayana, alongside Hans Zimmer. Each journey has strengthened my purpose,” he added.
The controversy began after Rahman suggested, in a BBC Asian Network interview, that shifting industry dynamics over the past eight years may have influenced opportunities for composers, hinting that decisions were increasingly driven by non-creative forces and, at times, a communal atmosphere. These remarks sparked debate across social media and drew responses from industry figures, underlining the sensitivity of conversations about representation and inclusivity in entertainment circles.
