Varun Dhawan has landed in a social media storm after the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) publicly called him out for performing pull-ups inside a Mumbai Metro coach.
The matter surfaced after MMMOCL shared a clip on its official Instagram handle showing Varun using the overhead grab handles as workout equipment during a metro ride. While the moment may have been intended as a playful, fitness-forward video, the metro authority used it to send a clear safety message to commuters.
In its notice, the Maha Mumbai Metro account wrote, “This video should have come with a disclaimer like the ones in your action movies, Varun Dhawan - Do Not Try This On Maha Mumbai Metro”. The post added, “We get it, it is cool to hang out with friends inside our metros, but those grab handles are not for hanging.”
The authority also warned that such behaviour can have legal consequences. In the same message, MMMOCL stated, “Acts like these are punishable under the sections relating to causing nuisance and/or damage to property given in the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002; attracting penalties and even imprisonment depending on the gravity of the offence.” It ended with a final line urging responsible commuting: “So folks, hang out, but don’t hang in there. Travel responsibly on Maha Mumbai Metro.”
The post quickly spread across platforms, triggering the usual internet split. Many users backed the metro authority, arguing that public transport is not a gym and that celebrity behaviour can encourage copycat stunts, especially when the clip looks easy and fun. Others felt the warning was fair but unnecessary to personalise, though MMMOCL’s tone stayed relatively cheeky and framed the call-out as a safety PSA rather than a moral lecture.
From a practical point of view, the metro’s argument is straightforward. Grab handles are designed for stability during acceleration, braking, and crowd movement. Using them for bodyweight exercise can loosen fixtures over time, damage equipment, and create a risk for nearby passengers if someone slips or the train jerks unexpectedly. Even if nothing goes wrong in one video, normalising it is the bigger issue.
Varun, meanwhile, has been in the spotlight for professional reasons too. The actor is currently riding on the buzz around his latest release Border 2, which has been pulling crowds in theatres. He was also recently trolled online for his role and expressions, though a section of actors and filmmakers reportedly came out in his support. So far, Varun has not publicly reacted to the metro authority’s post.
