George Miller directed ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ was released in theatres worldwide on Friday. Seeing the magnitude of the film and the cast, people expected it to immediately become the box office darling but the revenue earned by the film is nowhere near to the budget it cost to make it.
Anya Taylor-Joy starrer ‘Furiosa’ had a whopping budget of $168 million, excluding the tens of millions of dollars it took for marketing costs. The film was only able to generate estimated $25.6 in the United States and Canada over the weekend. The film earned around $33.8 million from overseas. It grosses a total of $58.9M from 76 total markets through Sunday.
Box office analysts expected the film to make a total of $31 million for a holiday weekend. Reportedly, this is the worst Memorial Day box office numbers in 43 years, ever since “Bustin’ Loose” collected $24 million in 1981.
‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ took home $45.4 million in 2015, or roughly $61 million in today’s dollars. The film wasn’t released on a holiday weekend either. It generated a whopping $380M worldwide at the end of its theatrical run.
The problem isn’t that ‘Furiosa’ is a bad film, the problem is that the theatre landscape is wonky and has been so for quite some time. The general public is honestly not going to the theatres.
We witnessed the same case with Ryan Gosling’s ‘Fall Guy’. It had a two week theatrical run and then went straight to video on demand. Films aren’t being allowed to live a longer life in theatres anymore.

‘Furiosa’ is a kickass film with standout performances from Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke. The prequel is now playing in theatres worldwide. Go support the film.
