Hong Kong cinema mourns the loss of veteran martial arts actor Yang Xiaolong, also known by his English name Bruce Leung, who passed away on January 14, 2026, at the age of 77. Leung was a noted figure in Hong Kong action films from the 1970s and 1980s and gained international recognition for his memorable performance as the Toad Beast in Stephen Chow’s cult hit Kung Fu Hustle.
According to reports from Chinese and Hong Kong media, Leung’s death was sudden, and the exact cause has not yet been disclosed. Family members held a quiet funeral, with official rites scheduled for January 26 in Longgang, Shenzhen, in southern China’s Guangdong Province.
Born in Hong Kong, Leung became one of the respected martial arts stars of his generation, often mentioned alongside legendary figures such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he starred in numerous action and kung fu films, showcasing his physical skill and onscreen presence. His role in Kung Fu Hustle introduced him to a global audience, helping cement his reputation beyond Asian cinema.
Though details of his recent activities are limited, reports note that Leung remained active socially and professionally almost up to his death, even joining acquaintances for dinner and group photographs the day before he passed away.
Hong Kong film icon Jackie Chan paid tribute to Leung on social media, expressing deep shock and respect. Chan remembered him as a true kung fu master with deep expertise in traditional martial arts, whose contributions to cinema and television earned him admiration from peers and audiences alike.
