Jiiva’s return to theatres with Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil has largely been greeted with warmth. The film, a light, slice-of-life drama, opened to encouraging word-of-mouth and crossed the Rs 1 crore mark on its first day, marking a confident comeback for the actor.
But amid the praise, one casual line of dialogue unexpectedly triggered a wave of criticism online.
Released on January 15, the film is directed by Nithish Sahadev, who makes his Tamil debut after the Malayalam hit Falimy.
Audiences have largely embraced its simple humour and relatable tone. However, a humorous use of the line “Conditions follow pannungada” became the focal point of controversy, not because of its intent in the film, but due to its association with a recent real-life tragedy.
The phrase became widely known following a devastating incident in Karur that claimed 40 lives. The tragedy occurred during a rally organised by actor-turned-politician Vijay, founder and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The rally, held at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway, drew massive crowds eager to see Vijay’s convoy, leading to a fatal escalation.
In the aftermath, visuals from hospitals showed grieving families and chaos on the ground. During this period, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh was heard urging the public to follow safety protocols, saying, “Padichu padichu sonna conditions follow pannunga da.” The line, clipped and circulated online, soon became inseparably linked to the tragedy, even as it simultaneously trended in meme culture.
This context is what upset a section of viewers. They argued that using a phrase associated with loss and grief in a comic setting felt insensitive, regardless of its popularity on social media. The criticism quickly gained traction, prompting a response from the film’s team.
Addressing the backlash at the film’s success meet, Jiiva apologised and clarified the intent behind the dialogue. “It was a trending term, so we used it. We thought it would be good, and we did get a good response. But we didn’t want to hurt anyone,” he said, acknowledging the hurt caused.
Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil also stars Thambi Ramaiah, Ilavarasu, Prathana Nathan and Anuraj OB. The technical crew includes Bablu Aju as cinematographer, Vishnu Vijay as music composer and Arjune Babu as editor. The film is produced by Kannan and co-produced by Deepak Ravi, with the screenplay written by Nithish Sahadev along with Sanjo Joseph and Anuraj OB.
