What began as a modest idea has grown into a deeply personal and ambitious movement for Architaa Chawla and her team behind the independent film Nukkad Naatak.
Instead of relying on traditional promotions, the makers have chosen an unconventional, grassroots path — one that mirrors the soul of the film itself.
Six members of the team packed their lives into a rented caravan and set off from Mumbai, travelling city to city and stopping at street corners, or nukkads, to speak directly to people.
Along the way, they perform, share stories, and strike conversations with strangers, inviting them to experience Nukkad Naatak not just as a film, but as a shared cultural moment. The idea was simple: a film rooted in street life should meet its audience where real life unfolds.
For Architaa Chawla, the journey has been as emotional as it has been exhausting. What started as an experiment has steadily transformed into a full-fledged movement.
Their goal is bold — 100 housefull shows on the film’s release day, 27 February — but it is driven by belief rather than bravado. The team has come to describe their journey as taking the film “Nukkad se Nationwide”, a phrase that has begun to resonate with audiences they meet along the way.
The response so far has been unexpectedly organic. Regional media outlets have picked up the story of the caravan on the road, while YouTubers, independent creators and social media enthusiasts have begun documenting and supporting the journey on their own.
At each stop, passers-by pause not just to watch, but to talk — sharing their own stories, asking questions, and engaging with the idea of cinema as a collective experience rather than a distant spectacle.
Yet, while the grassroots response has been encouraging, the team believes the story deserves wider national attention. This is the first time an independent Indian film has attempted such a raw, street-level promotional campaign, and Architaa Chawla hopes it can inspire a broader conversation about how films connect with audiences.
