Timothée Chalamet who has been facing backlash for his comments 'Nobody cares' about traditional ballet and opera during an open house with Matthew McConaughey.
During the open house Timothee told Matthew that he didn't want theatres to turn like 'ballet or opera', where the artists have to 'keep this thing alive although no one cares' about these traditional forms of performing arts anymore.
Veteran actress Whoopi Goldberg criticised Timothée Chalamet due to recent disparaging statements he made regarding ballet and opera that caused many celebrities and members of the arts community to respond to his comments with outrage.
While he did say he didn’t mean to offend anyone with what he said; many artists involved with those two forms of artistic expression were offended by what he said.
Reacting to the controversy on the talk show The View, Whoopi strongly condemned the remark, calling it dismissive and disrespectful toward performers who dedicate their lives to those art forms.
She reminded Timothee Chalamet that his own family has ties to dance and performing arts and urged him to think more carefully before making such comments.
Whoopi Goldberg went on to warn the actor about the impact of his words, saying that insulting other artistic disciplines can easily offend the communities that sustain them.
At one point, she said that the actor should “be careful,” stressing that dismissing someone else’s craft cannot be softened simply by adding a disclaimer of respect afterward.
Goldberg further noted that saying something insulting and then adding “no disrespect” does not make it any less offensive. She shared, “He is a boy to me. No disrespect. Really, don’t apologise when you’ve insulted. It doesn’t sound right. You can’t say, ‘Oh, this is dumb, no disrespect.’ That’s absolute disrespect.”
The co-host of The View, Sunny Hostin, expressed her disappointment at regressive and general comments made by Timothée; specifically, comments that implied artistic expression, which require years of hard work and dedication to master, were "vapid" and "shallow."
Many in the performing arts community, including opera singers and ballet dancers from the genre, were quick to differentiate themselves from the actor's remarks by stating that their art forms have existed for hundreds of years and continue to thrive to this day.
